Mount Assiniboine Traverse hiking guide: route map, stages & where to stay

The Mount Assiniboine traverse: about 55 km (34 miles) from Sunshine Village in Banff over Citadel Pass to Lake Magog below Mount Assiniboine, then out over Wonder Pass and down Bryant Creek to Mount Shark. Most hikers take 4 to 6 days, camping or staying in the Naiset Huts or the lodge.

The Mount Assiniboine traverse is one of the classic backpacking trips of the Canadian Rockies. It crosses the Great Divide between Banff National Park in Alberta and Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park in British Columbia, from the alpine meadows of Sunshine Village to Lake Magog at the foot of Mount Assiniboine (3,618 m), the "Matterhorn of the Rockies". You leave over Wonder Pass and walk down Bryant Creek to the Mount Shark trailhead in Kananaskis Country. Parks Canada gives the trip as 53 to 56 km over 4 days or more. There is no road into the Assiniboine core area: you hike in, fly in by helicopter, or both.

The route

From the top of the Sunshine Village gondola (2,170 m) the trail crosses the Sunshine Meadows and passes Rock Isle Lake junction and Quartz Ridge to Howard Douglas Lake. It climbs to Citadel Pass (2,360 m) on the Alberta–BC border, then drops steeply towards Porcupine campground. Next comes a long, dry traverse of the Golden Valley slopes and the Valley of the Rocks, an old landslide with no water for about 6 km. You reach Og Lake, with your first full view of Mount Assiniboine, then cross Og Meadows to the core area at Lake Magog. Here are Assiniboine Lodge, the Naiset Huts, the main campground and a web of day hikes: Nub Peak, Sunburst and Cerulean lakes, Wonder Pass and The Niblet.

To leave, you walk past Gog Lake and climb to Wonder Pass (2,395 m), the high point of the trip. You then descend switchbacks above the turquoise Marvel Lake, traverse avalanche slopes to the east end of the lake, and join the Bryant Creek trail. The last day follows Bryant Creek past Big Springs and Trail Centre, crosses the Spray River and climbs gently on old logging roads to Mount Shark.

This guide follows the Parks Canada itinerary and splits the route into 4 stages, about 13.0 km each: Sunshine Village to Howard Douglas Lake, Howard Douglas Lake to Lake Magog, Lake Magog to Marvel Lake, and Marvel Lake to Mount Shark. Stage 2 is long, 21.5 km. Many hikers split it differently and camp at Porcupine (13.4 km from Sunshine) or Og Lake (21.6 km) on the first night. Most people add one to three rest days at Lake Magog. They are not stages here, but they are the best part of the trip.

When to go

The hiking season is short: from early July, when the snow leaves Citadel Pass and Wonder Pass, to late September. In 2026 record snowpack delayed access to Sunshine Meadows until 6 July. Wildflowers peak from mid-July to early August, and the larches turn gold in the second half of September, which is also the busiest time at Lake Magog. Snow can fall in any month, nights are often near freezing at 2,200 m, and summer afternoons bring thunderstorms with hail. Assiniboine Lodge and its helicopter run from about 20 June to 1 October; outside that window there are no services or flights.

How hard is it?

The traverse is a moderate to hard backpacking trip on well-used, mostly well-marked trails, with no scrambling. The total ascent is only about 1,250 m because you start high, but you carry a full pack, the passes are exposed, and stage 2 is a long day. Allow 7 to 10 hours from Sunshine to Lake Magog and about 9 hours from the lodge to Mount Shark. You need good fitness, navigation skills and gear for cold, wet weather.

Permits and booking

You need bookings in three jurisdictions, and the core area books out fast.

BC Parks advises that you do not enter the core area without a reservation, and the custodians check it.

Getting there and away

Banff is 1.5 hours by road from Calgary airport. A free shuttle runs from Banff hotels to the Sunshine Village base, and the gondola (about 25 minutes) runs daily from 8 am to 6 pm in summer. Ask for a one-way ticket at Guest Services. Walking up the access road instead adds 6.5 km and 525 m.

Mount Shark is the hard part. It lies at the end of a gravel road off Highway 742, about an hour from Canmore. There is no public transport or shuttle back, so leave a car there first, arrange a ride, or book a private transfer. Assiniboine Lodge flies hikers between the Mount Shark heliport and Lake Magog on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, at $265 one way in 2027. You can also fly your pack in or out for $7 per pound. Many hikers fly in and walk out, or walk in from Sunshine and fly out. Car break-ins happen at Mount Shark, so leave nothing in sight.

Money, food and phone signal

There are no shops on the trail. Bring all your food and fuel from Banff or Canmore. At Lake Magog the lodge sells afternoon tea, cake, beer and wine to campers and hut guests on non-flight days, cash preferred. There is no reliable mobile signal after Sunshine Village. Carry a satellite messenger or personal locator beacon, and tell someone your plans.

What to pack

Safety

Black and grizzly bears are common. Make noise, keep food in the lockers or on bear poles, and never leave a pack alone. Thunderstorms build quickly over the passes, so cross Citadel Pass and Wonder Pass early in the day. In an emergency call 911 and say which park you are in. From a satellite phone call Parks Canada on 403-762-4506. The lodge warns that a helicopter evacuation can take up to 48 hours in bad weather.
