GR54 Tour des Écrins hiking guide: route map, stages & where to stay
The GR54 loop around the Écrins massif in the French Alps: about 194 km from Le Bourg-d'Oisans and back over 14 passes and almost 12,000 m of climbing. Usually 13 stages (10-13 days), sleeping in mountain refuges, gîtes and village hotels.

The Tour de l'Oisans et des Écrins, the GR54, is the classic long loop around the Écrins massif in the French Alps. It starts and ends in Le Bourg-d'Oisans and circles the highest peaks of the Parc national des Écrins, from the Meije to the Olan. The official route is about 194 km long, crosses 14 passes and climbs almost 12,000 m. The national park splits it into 13 stages, and hikers sleep in mountain refuges, walkers' gîtes and village hotels. It is waymarked with the red and white stripes of the French GR network.
The route
The park describes the loop clockwise. From Le Bourg-d'Oisans the trail climbs on cable-protected ledges to old hamlets, crosses the Sarenne and drops to Clavans-le-Bas. It then climbs to Besse-en-Oisans and the Plateau d'Emparis, where the Col du Souchet looks straight at the Meije glaciers, and goes down to La Grave. The Romanche leads to the Alpe de Villar-d'Arène, and the Col d'Arsine opens a high-mountain world with a glacier lake before the long descent to Le Monêtier-les-Bains. The Col de l'Eychauda leads to the Vallouise. The next day crosses the Col de l'Aup Martin, the highest point of the loop (about 2,760 m), to the Pré de la Chaumette. Three shale passes lead to the Lac de Vallonpierre and the wild Valgaudemar, then the Col de la Vaurze drops into the Valjouffrey, the Col de Côte Belle (2,290 m) into Valsenestre, and the steep Col de la Muzelle (2,613 m) into the Vénéon valley. The last day passes the Col du Vallon and the Lac du Lauvitel, the largest lake in the Oisans, back to Le Bourg-d'Oisans.
This guide follows the GR54 as mapped on OpenStreetMap and uses the park's 13 stages, about 14.8 km each. Two stage ends are short side trips off the GR: the Refuge des Mouterres (15 minutes off the trail on the Plateau d'Emparis) and Valsenestre (1.7 km down the valley). The walking line here does not include those detours, so it measures about 192 km.
Highlights
- The Meije from the Plateau d'Emparis: the classic view across to La Grave and its glaciers
- The Col d'Arsine: a glacier and its lake right beside the trail
- The Col de l'Aup Martin: the roof of the tour, in a world of scree and shale
- The Lac de Vallonpierre below the Sirac, and the deep, quiet Valgaudemar
- Valsenestre and the Valjouffrey: remote hamlets with almost no traffic
- The Lac de la Muzelle and the Lac du Lauvitel on the last two days
When to walk the GR54
The park gives late June to mid-September as the best season. Most refuges are staffed from mid-June to mid- or late September. In June and early July snow often lies on the north side of the high passes, especially below the Col de la Muzelle and the Col de la Vaurze, and ice axe and crampons can be needed: ask the refuges about conditions before you set out. July and August are the busiest months and afternoon storms are common, so start early. September is quieter, but check that every refuge you need is still open.
How many days do you need?
The 13 official stages take 13 days. Many fit hikers join short days, for example Clavans-le-Bas to the Alpe de Villar-d'Arène, or Vallonpierre to the Refuge des Souffles via La Chapelle, and finish in 10 to 12 days. Roads reach the route at La Grave, Le Monêtier, Vallouise, La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, Le Désert and Valsenestre, so you can start anywhere on the loop or walk only part of it. Allow a spare day for bad weather.
Difficulty
This is a demanding trek for fit, experienced hikers. Most days have 900 to 1,600 m of climbing on steep, stony paths, and several passes are close to high-mountain terrain. There are short cable-protected passages above Le Bourg-d'Oisans, and the rock step between the Col du Vallon and the Lauvitel can be dangerous in rain. Late snow on north faces is the main hazard early in the season. There is no via ferrata on the main route. Some stages have no refuge or shop on the way, so carry food for the day.
Permits, rules and booking
No permit or fee is needed. Most of the loop is in the core of the national park, where dogs are banned even on a lead, so the GR54 cannot be walked with a dog. Camping is not allowed in the core, but a one-night bivouac is allowed from 7 pm to 9 am, at least an hour's walk from roads and the park boundary. At the Lac de la Muzelle and the Lac du Lauvitel you may only bivouac in the marked zones. No fires and no drones. Book refuges and gîtes ahead for July and August; the club refuges (FFCAM) take online bookings. Several stage ends have only one place to sleep, such as the Pré de la Chaumette, Vallonpierre and the Souffles.
Getting there and away
Grenoble has the nearest railway station and airport (Lyon and Geneva are larger airports). Daily regional buses run from Grenoble to Le Bourg-d'Oisans, which takes about an hour by road. Parking for the whole tour is behind the tourist office. La Grave and Le Monêtier-les-Bains are on the main road from Grenoble to Briançon, and the Valgaudemar has a summer shuttle bus from Saint-Firmin, which makes it easy to join or leave the loop.
Money and phone signal
Bring enough cash, especially for the southern half. Some refuges, such as the Mouterres and the Fay, take only cash or French cheques. Shops are in the bigger villages: Le Bourg-d'Oisans, La Grave, Le Monêtier and Vallouise. Take out cash in Le Bourg-d'Oisans before you start. Mobile signal is patchy in the deep valleys and on many passes; the refuges and gîtes can call for help.
What to pack
Good boots with grip on wet rock, poles, waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers and a hat, sun protection, a sleeping-bag liner for the refuges, a first-aid kit, a headtorch, water bottles and food for two days. Early in the season, ask whether you need an ice axe and crampons. Take a paper map or the topo-guide and an offline GPS track, as some sections have little waymarking.
Safety
In an emergency call 112 or 15 for a medical emergency. For mountain rescue, call 04 76 22 22 22 in the Isère (Oisans, Valjouffrey, Muzelle) or 04 92 22 22 22 in the Hautes-Alpes (La Grave to the Valgaudemar). Check the Météo-France mountain forecast every day and cross high passes early. Livestock guard dogs protect flocks on the pastures: stop, let them see you, then go around the flock calmly.
2026 notes
Heavy rain on 27-28 August 2026 caused floods in the Vallouise and the Vénéon. The park said the GR54 itself stayed open, with wet stream crossings in the Vallouise, but roads were cut beyond Ailefroide and in the upper Vénéon. A new park decree on bivouac in the core zone came into force on 26 June 2026. Check the park's news before you start.
