The Troy Culture Route (Troya Kültür Rotası) is a waymarked walking and cycling trail in Çanakkale province in north-west Turkey. It runs about 120 km from the ancient city of Troy, near the Dardanelles, south along the Aegean coast of the Troad to the ancient harbour of Assos. On the way it links farming villages, olive groves, pine forest and quiet beaches with Alexandria Troas, the Temple of Apollo Smintheus and the Temple of Athena at Assos. The route was set up in 2018 by the Çanakkale History and Culture Foundation (ÇATKAV) under the "Future is in Tourism" programme, and the official site gives seven stages and 5 to 7 days. It is marked in red and white.
The route
The trail starts at the Troy Museum at Tevfikiye, next to the Troy archaeological site, and crosses the flat Trojan plain through Çıplak and Kalafat and over the Karamenderes river (the Scamander of the Iliad) to Yeniköy, a village above the sea facing Bozcaada (Tenedos). Stage 2 passes the Achilles tumulus and the ruined tower of the Cezayirli Hasan Paşa pavilion, then goes through Üvecik and Bozköy, past the mound of Hanaytepe, to the small resort town of Geyikli. Stage 3 crosses the huge site of Alexandria Troas, with its Roman baths, and touches the coast near Aktaş before climbing to Akçakeçili. Stage 4 is a short day through the hill villages of Alemşah, Tavaklı and Çamoba to Kösedere, known for its tomatoes. Stage 5 follows an old Roman road and crosses a Roman bridge to Gülpınar and the Smintheion, a temple of Apollo with a small museum. Stage 6 climbs through Kocaköy to Bademli on its plateau, and the last stage goes through Koyunevi, Bektaş and Kuruoba to Behramkale, the village below the acropolis of Assos.
This guide follows the route as mapped on OpenStreetMap and the official track, about 119 km, and splits it into 7 stages, about 17.0 km each, ending in the same villages as the official stages. One change: the official route walks from the Hasan Paşa pavilion to Yeniköy and back again the next morning. This guide reaches Yeniköy on a quiet plain road instead, so stage 1 is about 11 km and stage 2 about 27 km. The trail is low: the highest point is about 350 m, between Bademli and Bektaş, and the total climb is under 2,000 m.
Highlights
- Troy and the Troy Museum: the UNESCO World Heritage site of Troy and the modern Troy Museum at the start
- The Trojan plain: the Scamander river, the Achilles tumulus and the views to Bozcaada
- Alexandria Troas: a Hellenistic and Roman port city with the great baths and gymnasium
- Apollo Smintheion: the temple of Apollo at Gülpınar, with column drums and a small site museum
- The Roman road and bridge between Kösedere and Gülpınar
- Assos: the Doric Temple of Athena on the acropolis above the sea, where Aristotle lived and taught for a few years, and the old stone harbour
When to walk
The best months are April to early June and mid-September to November. Summers are hot, often above 30 °C, with little shade on the farm tracks, and in 2026 the Çanakkale Governorship closed the province's forests to the public from 1 June to 30 September because of fire risk; several stages cross pine forest. Winter brings rain and wind, and after heavy rain the Karamenderes can flood the only bridge on stage 1; the official site and app post warnings. Strong north winds can blow for days at any time of year, which is pleasant in summer but cold in a tent.
How many days?
The official plan has 7 stages over 5 to 7 days; add a day for Troy and its museum before you start. Fit walkers can join stages 4 and 5 (Akçakeçili to Gülpınar, about 30 km) or stages 6 and 7 (Gülpınar to Assos, about 31 km). Stage 2 is long; you can shorten it by staying at the small Elibol Pansiyon on the main road at Üvecik, about 13 km in. The thermal hotel at Kestanbol, 2 km off the trail near Alexandria Troas, is a good alternative end for stage 3.
Difficulty
The route is easy to moderate. There are no mountains, but days are long, mostly on farm tracks, village roads and some asphalt, with short rough paths through scrub and forest. The main problems are heat, sun and the lack of water between villages, so carry at least 2 litres and refill at village fountains (çeşme) and shops. Waymarks are faded in places and locals often send walkers to the car road, so carry the official KML track or the Troy Culture Route app on your phone.
Getting there and away
Çanakkale is about 5 hours by bus from Istanbul and has a small airport. Village minibuses leave Çanakkale every hour for Tevfikiye, Çıplak and Kalafat at the start (about 30 minutes). Geyikli, the halfway point, has buses to Çanakkale and the ferry to Bozcaada, which makes a good rest day. From Assos, minibuses run to Ayvacık and Küçükkuyu, where long-distance buses stop on the Istanbul–İzmir road.
Accommodation and booking
Nights are in village pensions, small hotels, village houses and campsites. Geyikli, Gülpınar and Assos have plenty of rooms. Yeniköy, Akçakeçili and Kösedere have almost none: one rental guest house and campsites at Yeniköy, a campsite at Akçakeçili, and in Kösedere a village room arranged by the muhtar (headman). Bademli's beds are in Koyunevi, 2 km further on, and on the coast 4 km below the village. Many hikers stay two nights in Tevfikiye, or take a taxi to a coast hotel and back. Most places are booked by phone or WhatsApp; some Turkish helps. Book ahead in July and August and at weekends in Assos.
Money and phone signal
Turkey uses the lira. Hotels in Geyikli and Assos take cards, but village shops, coffeehouses and small pensions often want cash. Geyikli has several ATMs; elsewhere they are few, so carry enough cash for two or three days. Mobile signal is good in the villages and patchy in a few valleys.
What to pack
Light walking shoes or boots, sun hat, sunscreen, 2–3 litres of water capacity, a light rain jacket, a swimsuit for the beaches, a headlamp, blister kit and a power bank. If you plan to camp, bring a tent that stands up to strong wind.
Safety
In any emergency call 112 (ambulance, gendarmerie, fire and AFAD rescue). The nearest emergency departments are in Çanakkale, Ezine and Ayvacık, 15 to 30 km by road from the trail. Village and sheep dogs often bark or follow walkers; keep away from flocks and do not run. Do not walk in the forest during a fire ban, never light a fire, and report smoke to 112.

Emergency, hospitals and services
In an emergency call 112: one free number for ambulance, gendarmerie, fire and AFAD rescue, from any phone. 4 hospitals with an emergency department are within reach: state hospitals in Çanakkale, Ezine and Ayvacık and the university hospital in Çanakkale, all 15 to 30 km by road from the trail. Every stage page lists the nearest one, plus health centres and pharmacies on that stage.
Where to stay on the Troy Culture Route
Village pensions, small hotels, village houses and campsites, grouped by stage from Troy to Assos. Listings were checked online in October 2026. Places marked "listed in a map or guide listing" appear on OpenStreetMap, map business listings, the official route site or a walker's report, but could not be confirmed on their own website. Geyikli, Gülpınar and Assos have many rooms; Yeniköy, Akçakeçili and Kösedere have only a guest house, campsites or a village room arranged by the muhtar (headman), and Bademli's beds are in Koyunevi and on the coast below. Book ahead in July and August.
