The Amatola Trail is a six-day hut-to-hut hike through the Amathole Mountains of the Eastern Cape, South Africa, and one of the toughest multi-day trails in the country. It runs about 100 km from Maden Dam, north of Qonce (King William's Town), to Hogsback, through deep indigenous forest, high grassland, waterfalls and river gorges. You sleep in five basic wooden huts, carry your own food and gas stove, and walk in a group of at least four. The trail is self-guided and is booked as a package through Amatola Trails. It is operating in 2026: the season runs from 1 September to 31 May, and prices are published until 31 March 2027.

The route

Day 1 climbs more than 700 m through the Pirie forest from Maden Dam to Gwili Gwili Hut, high above the valley. Day 2 is a long, undulating forest traverse to Dontsa Hut, with little water after the first stream. Day 3 is the longest and hardest: up onto the plateau grassland, past a waterfall that is slippery after rain, through the Hovald forest, down past the Cata forest station and then 550 m back up through the Waterfall Forest to Cata Hut. Day 4 climbs to Geju Peak (1,880 m), the highest point, and drops 1,000 m through the Malan forest into the Mnyameni gorge, crossing the stream 11 times. Day 5 is mostly open country with many swimming pools and ends in the Schwarzwald forest at Zingcuka Hut. Day 6 passes more waterfalls, climbs about 950 m almost to the top of the Hogsback peaks and descends to the Tyume River on the edge of Hogsback.

This guide follows the route mapped on OpenStreetMap and splits it into 6 stages, about 14.8 km each, one per hut night. The mapped line is about 89 km. The operator's own day figures add up to about 102 km and 5,000 m of ascent, because the real path twists far more than the map shows. Plan by hours, not kilometres.

Highlights

When to walk the Amatola Trail

The trail is open from 1 September to 31 May and closed from June to August, when days are short and snow is possible. The operator recommends spring and autumn, with May often the best month. October and November are also quiet and pleasant. Summer (December to February) brings heat, heavy afternoon storms, swollen rivers and thick mist, but long days. Weather changes fast at any time of year: carry warm and waterproof clothes even in summer.

How many days do you need?

Six walking days and five nights on the trail, plus a night in Hogsback before and after. Most days take 7 to 10 hours, and day 3 is the longest. There are no rest days on the trail: every hut is booked for one night. The shorter 2-day Zingcuka Loop (Hogsback – Zingcuka Hut – Hogsback, about 38 km) uses days 5 and 6.

Booking, permits and prices

Book with Amatola Trails, the private booking agent, by email or the form on its website. It sells full packages only. In 2026–27 the 6-day trail costs R3,125 per adult and R2,125 per school child. The package includes two nights in the dorms at Away with the Fairies in Hogsback, the briefing, safe parking and the shuttle to Maden Dam. You pay a non-refundable deposit of R1,800 per hiker within 7 days. The permit and hut fee is paid directly to the DFFE (the national forestry department) at least one month before you start. The operator's site is inconsistent on whether this fee is included, so confirm the total. Rules: at least 4 hikers per group, no children under 15, no alcohol, and you need medical insurance.

Getting there and away

The nearest airport is King Phalo Airport in KuGompo City (formerly East London), about 140 km from Hogsback. Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) is about 260 km away. Amatola Trails runs an airport shuttle for R2,000 (1–6 people) or R3,000 (7–12) each way. Most hikers drive to Hogsback, leave the car at Acorn House next to Away with the Fairies, attend the 6 pm briefing and take the 8 am shuttle the next day. The drive to Maden Dam takes about 2 hours. The trail finishes about 4 km outside Hogsback. From there you walk back through the old forest or along the forestry road.

Huts, food and water

The five huts (Gwili Gwili, Dontsa, Cata, Mnyameni and Zingcuka) are basic wooden huts for up to 24 people. They have bunks with mattresses, a lockable security gate, toilets, a braai area and a wood-fired donkey boiler for hot showers, but no electricity. Mnyameni may have no running water. Bring a sleeping bag, a gas stove, a pot and all your food. Goodie drops can deliver food, gas and dry clothes to selected huts for a fee shared by the group. Stream water is generally safe, but filter it after rain. Day 2 is the dry day: carry 2 to 3 litres from the first stream.

Money and phone signal

The currency is the South African rand (R, ZAR). There are no shops on the trail and only small shops in Hogsback, so bring what you need and some cash. Mobile signal is intermittent, mostly on ridges and open ground. Save offline maps and follow the yellow footprints painted on trees and rocks.

What to pack

Good boots, gaiters, full rain gear, warm layers, a beanie and gloves, sun protection, a swimsuit and a headlamp. Add a power bank, a water filter, a first aid kit and a blister kit. Pack everything in waterproof liners: rivers, rain and mist are common. Keep your pack under about 20% of your body weight.

Difficulty and safety

This is a hard trail: 12–21 km days with 600–1,000 m of ascent, steep forest paths, slippery rock, river crossings and long descents that are hard on the knees. It suits fit hikers with multi-day experience. In an emergency call 112 from a mobile or 10177 for an ambulance. The booking agent is not a rescue service. Extraction insurance (SATIB, R100 per hiker) can be bought at the briefing. The nearest hospitals are in Qonce, Keiskammahoek and Alice. Do not cross rivers in flood, and take the lower route around Geju Peak in mist.

History

The Amathole Mountains were a stronghold of the amaXhosa during the 19th-century frontier wars. Their forests were later worked for timber and are now state forest and nature reserves. Hogsback takes its name from the bristly ridges of the peaks above the village.

The 6 stages

The classic six days hut to hut from Maden Dam near Qonce to Hogsback, via Gwili Gwili, Dontsa, Cata, Mnyameni and Zingcuka huts, over Geju Peak (1,880 m) and through the Pirie, Malan and Schwarzwald forests. The trail is open from 1 September to 31 May and is booked as a package for groups of at least four. Walking times allow for steep forest paths, river crossings and a full pack. Each stage page has a map, elevation profile, the hut and the nearest help.

Emergency, hospitals and services

In an emergency call 112 from a mobile or 10177 for an ambulance, and ask for mountain rescue. Mobile signal on the trail is patchy, mostly on ridges and open ground, and the booking agent is not a rescue service, so consider the SATIB extraction cover sold at the briefing. 6 hospitals with an emergency department are within reach by road, the nearest in Qonce, Keiskammahoek and Alice. Every stage page lists the nearest help.

Where to stay on the Amatola Trail

The five trail huts and the lodges in Hogsback at each end, grouped by stage from Maden Dam to Hogsback. Listings were checked online in October 2026. Places marked "not confirmed by the operator" have a website or an OpenStreetMap listing but show no 2025–2026 date or prices, so call before you count on them. The huts come only with the Amatola Trails package, which also includes two nights at Away with the Fairies in Hogsback and the shuttle to Maden Dam.
