Mount Assiniboine Traverse emergency & health guide: hospitals, rescue, 911 and bears

How to call for help with no mobile signal, the nearest hospital for each of the 4 stages, and the rules of three parks: permits and fees, bears, fires, dogs and the helicopter.

In an emergency call 911 from any phone, in Alberta and in British Columbia, and say which park you are in. There is no reliable mobile signal on most of the route, so carry a satellite messenger or personal locator beacon (PLB). From a satellite phone call the Parks Canada emergency line, 403-762-4506, or Kananaskis Emergency Services, 403-591-7767, near Mount Shark. In summer the Assiniboine Lodge staff and BC Parks custodians at Lake Magog can radio for help. Give your stage, the nearest campground and your GPS position. Helicopters cannot fly at night or in cloud, so an evacuation can take a long time.

There is no reliable mobile signal after Sunshine Village, so carry a satellite messenger or personal locator beacon and use the SOS only in a real emergency. In summer, Assiniboine Lodge (office 403-678-2883) and the BC Parks custodians at Lake Magog can radio for help. Rescues are by helicopter and cannot fly at night or in cloud: the lodge warns that an evacuation can take up to 48 hours in bad weather. Leave your plan with someone at home and check the Parks Canada trail conditions and the Assiniboine Lodge trail report before you start.
