The Historical Way (Caminho Histórico) is the inland long-distance path of the Rota Vicentina in south-west Portugal. It runs from Santiago do Cacém in the Alentejo to Cabo de São Vicente, the south-western tip of mainland Europe, in 11 official stages and about 212 km. It follows old rural roads and footpaths between the towns and villages a few kilometres inland, through cork oak woods, low hills and river valleys. It is waymarked in red and white as part of the GR11 / E9 and was certified as a "Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe" by the European Ramblers Association in 2016 and 2020.

Rota Vicentina often describes the Historical Way as "13 sections and 263 km". That count includes two connecting routes that are not part of the main line: Cercal do Alentejo – Porto Covo (16 km), which links to the Fishermen's Trail, and Sabóia – Odemira (32 km), a long link from the inland railway. This guide covers the main line from Santiago do Cacém to Cabo de São Vicente.

The route

The first stage leaves the hilltop castle of Santiago do Cacém and crosses cork oak country to the hamlet of Vale Seco. The path then heads south to Cercal do Alentejo and climbs into the Serra de São Domingos, the highest point of the walk at about 329 m, before dropping to the small village of São Luís. The fourth stage, one of the longest, follows quiet valleys to Odemira on the Mira river. From Odemira the trail crosses open farmland to São Teotónio, then descends the Seixe valley to Odeceixe, where the Seixe stream marks the border between the Alentejo and the Algarve.

In the Algarve the route stays close to the coast. It runs through Rogil to Aljezur, with its Moorish castle above the river, and then out to the fishing village and clifftop fort of Arrifana. The ninth stage is the longest: it crosses the hills and the Bordeira valley to Carrapateira. The tenth goes inland again through Vilarinha and the restored village of Pedralva to Vila do Bispo. The last, short stage crosses the windy limestone plateau to the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente.

This guide follows the official GPS track of Rota Vicentina and splits it into 11 stages, about 18.7 km each. The official stage lengths run from 11.8 km (Aljezur – Arrifana) to 24.7 km (São Luís – Odemira). The total climb is modest, about 2,500 to 2,700 m over the whole walk.

Official variants

Combining it with the Fishermen's Trail

The Historical Way pairs well with the Fishermen's Trail, the coastal path of the Rota Vicentina, which has its own Outest guide. The two meet or come close at Odeceixe, Aljezur, Arrifana, Carrapateira and Vila do Bispo, and the Cercal – Porto Covo link joins them in the north. Many walkers switch to the coast for a few days, or use the Historical Way when wind or sand makes the cliff path hard going.

Highlights

When to walk the Historical Way

Rota Vicentina recommends walking between September and June, and the stage pages mark July and August as not recommended. Summer days are often over 30 °C, the inland stages have little shade, and rooms cost more and need longer minimum stays. Winter days are rarely below 11 °C, but it is the wettest season, and some valley crossings flood after heavy rain. Spring, from March to May, is the favourite season, with green hills and flowers. Check the forecast before each day and the Rota Vicentina Warning Map for closures.

How many days do you need?

Most walkers take 11 to 13 days: the 11 stages, plus a rest day or a day on a circular route. You can shorten it by starting in Odemira or Odeceixe, or by combining the second half with Fishermen's Trail stages.

Getting there and logistics

Rede Expressos buses leave Lisbon (Sete Rios) for Santiago do Cacém, which takes about 2 hours 20 minutes, and for other towns along the route, such as São Teotónio and Aljezur. The nearest railway station, Ermidas-Sado, is about 30 km from Santiago do Cacém; from there you need a taxi. At the southern end, Vamus Algarve buses link Faro with Lagos, and regional buses run from Lagos to Vila do Bispo, Sagres, Aljezur and Odeceixe. Some local routes run on weekdays only. Rota Vicentina partner taxis carry walkers and luggage between villages, from about €1 per km.

You sleep in guesthouses, rural houses (turismo rural), small hotels, hostels and a few campsites. Vale Seco and São Luís have very few beds, so book these first. Wild camping is not allowed. Several stages have no water or food on the way, so carry at least 1.5 litres of water and lunch.

Money and phone signal

Portugal uses the euro. Cards work in hotels and most restaurants in the towns, but small guesthouses and village cafés may want cash. There are cash machines (Multibanco) in the larger towns. Mobile signal is generally fine in the towns; expect gaps in the deeper valleys.

What to pack

Worn-in walking shoes, a sun hat, sunscreen, a waterproof from October to May, a warm layer for windy evenings, 1.5 litres of water, snacks, a first-aid and blister kit, and the GPS track saved offline on your phone.

Difficulty

Rota Vicentina rates the Historical Way as easy, and it has no exposed or technical sections. The challenge is distance and heat: stages of 20 to 25 km on dirt roads, short steep climbs in the hills, and long stretches without shade or water. Where the path follows roads, walk on the left, facing traffic. In an emergency call 112.
