The Mestia to Ushguli trek is the classic multi-day hike of Upper Svaneti, the high mountain region of north-west Georgia below the main ridge of the Greater Caucasus. It links the regional town of Mestia with Ushguli, a cluster of tower villages at about 2,100 m that is one of the highest lived-in places in Europe. On the way you pass medieval Svan defence towers, glaciers under Tetnuldi and Shkhara, and the high Chkhunderi pass. Nights are in family guesthouses in the villages, so you only carry a day pack plus your clothes. The route is part of the Transcaucasian Trail and is marked in places with red and white paint, but signs are few.

The route

This guide follows the standard 4-day itinerary: Mestia - Zhabeshi - Adishi - Iprali - Ushguli. The first day leaves Mestia to the east, climbs through forest and meadows with views of Ushba and Tetnuldi, and ends with a walk up the Mulkhura valley to Zhabeshi. Day 2 climbs to the ridge below the Tetnuldi ski area and drops steeply to Adishi, a small village that can only be reached on foot or by a rough track. Day 3 is the big day: up the Adishischala valley, across the Adishi river, over the Chkhunderi pass (2,655 m) with the Adishi glacier in front of you, then down to Khalde and along the valley road to Iprali. Day 4 follows the Enguri valley through Davberi and a path on the far side of the river to Ushguli.

The line in this guide is about 55 km long, split into 4 stages of about 13.8 km each, with about 2,950 m of ascent. Guides quote 55 to 60 km, depending on the variant and on how much of the road you walk. The Transcaucasian Trail itself takes a higher, harder line from the Chkhunderi pass straight to Ushguli, which skips Khalde and Iprali.

Highlights

When to go

The season is July to September. In June snow can still lie on the Chkhunderi pass and the Adishi river is often high with meltwater. Early October can be beautiful in a dry year, but nights are cold, days are short and some guesthouses close. July and August are the busiest months: book beds ahead. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, so start early, above all on the pass day.

How hard is it?

The trek is moderate for fit hikers. Days are 10 to 17 km with 550 to 900 m of climbing, on steep, sometimes muddy mountain paths and some tracks and roads. Day 3 (about 17 km, 7 to 8 hours) is the hardest: a long climb to 2,655 m and the river crossing. Marking is patchy, so carry an offline map or GPS track.

The Adishi river crossing: about an hour after Adishi the path fords the glacier-fed Adishischala; there is no bridge. In the season local men wait with horses and take hikers across for about 25 GEL per person, in cash. The ride takes less than a minute and covers the main channel; a second, smaller channel is waded. Cross early in the morning, when the water is lowest. If you wade, unclip your hip belt, wear sandals, use poles, and never cross alone. After heavy rain or on a hot afternoon, wait or take the horse.

Permits and booking

No permit, ticket or fee is needed. The trek stays far from the Russian border and well away from Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the only areas the UK FCDO advises against. Guesthouses in Zhabeshi, Adishi, Iprali and Ushguli fill up in July and August: book a few weeks ahead, by phone or on Booking.com. Most offer dinner and breakfast for an extra charge, and some make a packed lunch.

Getting there and away

Mestia is reached by marshrutka (minibus) from Zugdidi (about 4 hours), and by direct summer minibuses from Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi. Vanilla Sky flies small planes to Mestia from Natakhtari near Tbilisi on several days a week and from Kutaisi on Wednesdays; flights sell out and are cancelled in bad weather. From Ushguli, shared minibuses and taxis go back to Mestia (about 1.5 hours on a paved road, about 40-50 GEL per person); they leave when full, mostly before mid-afternoon. Some guesthouses in Mestia will store luggage while you walk; ask when you book.

Money and phone signal

Georgia uses the lari (GEL). Mestia has several ATMs and banks, but there are no ATMs in Zhabeshi, Adishi, Iprali or Ushguli, and guesthouses take cash. Bring enough for beds, meals, the horse at the river and the ride back. Mobile signal is fair in the villages (Magti has the best coverage) but patchy between them; most guesthouses have wifi, but power cuts happen.

What to pack

Good boots, trekking poles, sandals for the river, a waterproof jacket, a warm layer for the pass, sun protection, a water filter or tablets, a first-aid kit and a power bank. Village tap water is safe; filter water from streams, because cattle graze everywhere. Buy snacks in Mestia: there are only small shops and cafés on the way.

Safety

In an emergency call 112; it works on any network and without a SIM card. Mountain rescue is run by the Emergency Management Service and can take hours to arrive. The nearest hospital is the small one in Mestia; the nearest full hospital is in Zugdidi, about 3 hours away by road. Herding dogs can be aggressive: do not run, stand still and call to the shepherd. Carry insurance that covers hiking and rescue, and tell your next guesthouse when you plan to arrive.

Rescues are run by the Emergency Management Service, often with a border police helicopter, and can take hours; phone signal is patchy between the villages. 2 hospitals are within reach: the small hospital in Mestia, 1 to 1.5 hours by road from Ushguli, and the full referral hospital in Zugdidi, about 3 hours from Mestia. Every stage page lists the nearest one, plus pharmacies and ATMs.
