Mount Kinabalu (4,095 m) is the highest mountain in Malaysia and on the island of Borneo, and one of the few big summits in Asia that a fit walker can reach without climbing skills. The standard climb starts at Timpohon Gate (1,866 m) in Kinabalu Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sabah, and takes two days: 6 km up a steep forest path to the Panalaban base camp at Laban Rata (3,272 m) on day 1, then a night start over bare granite to Low's Peak (4,095.2 m) for sunrise and all the way back down to Timpohon Gate on day 2. The round trip is about 17 km with 2,200 m of ascent and descent. A licensed Sabah Parks guide is compulsory, and you can only climb with a bed booked at Panalaban.
The route
The path from Timpohon Gate drops briefly to Carson Falls and then climbs almost without a break through montane and cloud forest. Much of it is high wooden or rock steps. Posts mark every 500 m, and shelters with toilets and water tanks (untreated) stand about every kilometre: Pondok Kandis, Ubah, Lowii, Mempening, Layang-Layang at 2,702 m, Vilosa and Paka. Above Layang-Layang the forest shrinks to gnarled bonsai-like trees, pitcher plants and rhododendrons, and the last stretch reaches the huts of Panalaban. Climbers call the whole base camp Laban Rata, after its main building.
On day 2 you leave at about 2:30 am. The Ranau Trail, built after the 2015 earthquake, climbs 1.27 km of stairs and rock steps to the Sayat-Sayat checkpoint (3,668 m). Above it the trail crosses open granite slabs, marked by a white rope that you must follow up and down, past South Peak and St John's Peak to the final scramble onto Low's Peak. After sunrise you walk back to Laban Rata for breakfast, check out by 10:30 am and descend the same path to Timpohon Gate, usually arriving between 1 and 3 pm.
This guide follows the trail as mapped on OpenStreetMap from Timpohon Gate to Low's Peak and splits it into 2 stages, about 4.0 km each: day 1 to Laban Rata and the summit push to Low's Peak. The map line is one way, 8.1 km; the official figure is 8.7 km, because the GPS trace smooths the zigzags. Add the full descent to day 2.
Highlights
- Sunrise from Low's Peak: the shadow of the mountain over Sabah, the Crocker Range and, on clear mornings, the South China Sea
- The summit plateau: bare granite under South Peak, St John's Peak and the Donkey Ears, and the drop into Low's Gully
- Cloud forest: pitcher plants, orchids and mossy trees along the day-1 trail
- Via ferrata: Mountain Torq's routes on the summit face, sold as add-ons from Panalaban
When to climb
You can climb all year. The drier months are roughly March to September; October to January is usually the wettest time. Rain can fall on any afternoon, so plan to reach Panalaban early. At the summit expect about 0 to 5 °C before dawn, wind and sometimes frost; at Laban Rata nights are about 10 °C. In heavy rain or strong wind the guides stop the summit attempt, and Sabah Parks does not refund it. In July 2025, 155 climbers had to be brought to safety when heavy rain sent a torrent of water down the summit trail.
How many days?
The standard package is 2 days and 1 night. Sabah Parks recommends 3 days: spend the night before the climb at Kinabalu Park HQ (about 1,550 m) or in Kundasang to acclimatise, and register early.
Permits and booking
There is a fixed daily quota tied to the beds at Panalaban, and it sells out months ahead, especially for weekends, school holidays and the dry season. You have two ways to book:
- Sabah Parks hostels: Panalaban Hostel (30 a day, all nationalities) and Lemaing Hostel (20 a day, Malaysians only), booked online at reservation.sabahparks.org.my. The 2026 package for international adults was RM1,043.25 with permit, insurance, one night and three meals. 2026 bookings opened on 1 December 2025.
- Sutera packages: Laban Rata Resthouse and Pendant Hut, sold through the Mount Kinabalu Climb Centre or tour operators.
On top come the conservation fee (RM50 for international adults), the guide (RM350 for up to 5 climbers), the Timpohon Gate shuttle (RM15–35) and porters (RM14 per kg), all paid at the park, mostly in cash. Names cannot be changed and cancellations are not refunded. Register at the park between 7:00 and 10:30 am on day 1, and pass Sayat-Sayat by 5:30 am on day 2 or you will be turned back.
Getting there and away
Kinabalu Park HQ is about 90 km (2 hours) from Kota Kinabalu by the road to Ranau. Shared minivans and buses bound for Ranau or Sandakan pass the park gate; ask to be dropped there. From the park office the KOKTAS shuttle drives the 4.5 km to Timpohon Gate.
Money and phone signal
Bring enough Malaysian ringgit in cash for the guide, shuttle and porter; do not count on an ATM near the park. Mobile signal is patchy on the trail and at Panalaban, so save your booking, QR code and indemnity form offline.
What to pack
Hiking shoes with good grip (sandals are not allowed), a head torch with spare batteries, warm layers including a fleece, a windproof and waterproof jacket, gloves with grip and a hat, a whistle, 1.5–2 litres of water, snacks, sunscreen, cash and your passport with a photocopy. The huts are not heated, but blankets are provided. Keep your day pack to 6–8 kg and send the rest up with a porter, or leave it in storage at the park.
Difficulty and safety
The climb is non-technical but hard: 2,230 m of ascent in 8.7 km, high steps the whole way and steep granite on ropes near the top. The descent is hard on the knees. Altitude sickness is common above 3,000 m: headache, nausea and dizziness are warning signs. Tell your guide, slow down and turn back if they get worse. Sabah Parks advises people with heart disease, high blood pressure, chronic asthma or similar conditions not to climb. Stay with your guide, follow the white rope, and if you lose it in cloud, stop and blow your whistle. In an emergency tell your guide and call 999 (112 from a mobile); the nearest hospital is in Ranau.
History
The Kadazan-Dusun people hold Kinabalu sacred as the resting place of the dead. Hugh Low reached the summit plateau in 1851, and the highest point carries his name; the first recorded ascent of the peak itself was by John Whitehead in 1888. Kinabalu Park was created in 1964 and became one of Malaysia's first World Heritage Sites in 2000. On 5 June 2015 an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 hit the mountain during the climbing day and killed 18 people. The old summit trail was destroyed, and the park reopened in December 2015 on the new Ranau Trail.

The 2 stages
The standard two-day Sabah Parks climb: day 1 from Timpohon Gate up the forest trail to the Panalaban base camp at Laban Rata, and the night summit push on the Ranau Trail and the granite plateau to Low's Peak for sunrise, followed by the descent to Timpohon Gate on the same day. Walking times allow for high steps, rope sections and altitude. Each stage page has a map, elevation profile, the mountain lodges and the nearest help.
| # | Stage | Distance | Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Timpohon Gate → Laban Rata | 5.5 km | hard |
| 2 | Laban Rata → Low's Peak | 2.6 km | easy |
Emergency, hospitals and services
In an emergency tell your guide first and call 999 (or 112 from a mobile). Guides radio Sabah Parks, whose rangers and mountain rescue team carry injured climbers down to Timpohon Gate. Mobile signal on the mountain is patchy. 3 hospitals with a 24-hour emergency department are within reach by road: the nearest is in Ranau, about 25 km from the park, and the main referral hospitals are in Kota Kinabalu. Every stage page lists the nearest help.
