The Carian Trail (Karia Yolu) is Türkiye's longest waymarked footpath: more than 850 km through ancient Caria in Muğla and Aydın provinces, opened in 2013 and waymarked in red and white. It joins old mule paths, caravan roads and shepherd tracks between fishing villages, pine forest and the ruins of Carian and Greek cities. This guide covers its two coastal peninsulas south and west of Marmaris, Bozburun and Datça, where most people walk it: steep rocky paths above empty bays, with the Greek islands of Symi and Rhodes on the horizon.

The route

The official trail starts in İçmeler, next to Marmaris. The Bozburun section (official stages 1 to 9) climbs over the hills to Turunç and Kumlubük, crosses to the mountain village of Bayır, then runs down the bare southern half of the peninsula through Taşlıca to the fortress of Loryma at Bozukkale bay. It turns north past Asardibi and Söğüt to the boat-building town of Bozburun, then Selimiye, back through Bayır to the Turgut waterfall, and over Hydas castle to Hisarönü bay.

Officially, hikers then take a dolmuş to Datça and walk the Datça section (stages 10 to 18) from Eski Datça round the western end of the peninsula to Knidos and back along the empty north coast to Balıkaşıran. To make one continuous walk, this guide links Hisarönü to Balıkaşıran (13.6 km, most of it on the D400 road; take the dolmuş for it if you prefer) and walks the Datça section in reverse: Balıkaşıran, Çakal, Emecik, Datça, Karaköy, Mersincik, Knidos, Palamutbükü and Domuzçukuru to Eski Datça. That gives about 288 km in 19 stages, about 15.1 km each. The total climb on the map is at least 9,000 m (the trail team's own figures are higher), but the highest point is only about 460 m: the work is in the many short, steep climbs on loose stone.

Highlights

When to walk the Carian Trail

The best months are March to May and late September to November. From June to early September temperatures pass 35 °C, springs dry up and fire risk is extreme. Winters are mild but wet, and many pensions in the bays close in winter; the trail team warns that an open pension in Palamutbükü is hard to find then. Summer is also closed by law: in 2026 a forest entry ban ran from 1 June to 31 October over almost the whole route (see below), so walk between November and May.

Closures and the forest entry ban in 2026

Fire closures. Wildfires in summer 2021 burned much of the north of the Bozburun peninsula. The trail team's notice of March 2023 closes stage 1 (İçmeler - Turunç - Kumlubük), stage 2 (Kumlubük - Bayır), the Bayır - Şelale half of stage 8 and the Turgut - Orhaniye - Hisarönü part of stage 9, because of fallen trees, logging and lost waymarks. The trail's English home page, updated in October 2025, still lists these routes as closed, and no reopening had been announced by October 2026. They stay on our map as the official line, but treat them as closed and ask the trail team (info@kariayolu.com) first. Bayır is on the Marmaris - Bozburun dolmuş road, so you can start at stage 3 there.

Forest entry ban. The Muğla Governorship banned entry to 50 forest areas from 1 June to 31 October 2026, including the forests of Marmaris, İçmeler, Turunç, Selimiye and Bayır and the Datça peninsula forests from Emecik to Karaköy, Mesudiye and Domuzçukuru. Tourism and sports groups need a permit, and the gendarmerie checks tents. A similar order comes every spring: search "Muğla ormanlara giriş yasağı" before you book.

How hard is it?

The trail is graded moderate to hard. Daily distances are short (10 to 20 km), but paths are rocky, steep and sometimes overgrown, with long stretches of shadeless hillside. Waymarks can be lost to new roads, logging or fire, so carry the official GPX track on your phone or GPS. Few people walk it, so do not walk alone unless you are experienced, and tell someone your route each day. Allow 3.5 to 7 hours a day, plus time for swimming and ruins.

Water

Springs and old cisterns are marked on the trail team's map, but springs can be dry and cistern water must be treated. Carry at least 2 litres; on the remote stages (Taşlıca - Loryma - Asardibi, Balıkaşıran - Çakal, Mersincik - Knidos) carry 3 litres or more.

Where to stay

There are no huts. You sleep in family pensions (pansiyon), apart-hotels, small hotels and village homes; Loryma, Asardibi, Çakal, Mersincik and Domuzçukuru have only camping. Many places are not on booking sites, so phone them. Book ahead for May, June and September weekends in Selimiye, Bozburun and Palamutbükü.

Getting there and away

The nearest airport is Dalaman (about 1.5 hours by road to Marmaris); Bodrum airport suits the Datça end. Marmaris has buses from Muğla, İzmir, Antalya and Istanbul, and dolmuşes run every few minutes to İçmeler. Village dolmuşes and Muğla Metropolitan Municipality buses link Marmaris with Turunç, Bozburun and Selimiye, and Marmaris with Datça along the D400, passing Hisarönü and Balıkaşıran; Datça has buses to Marmaris and Muğla. Timetables are published by Muğla Metropolitan Municipality (mugla.bel.tr). From Bodrum, the Bodrum Ferryboat car ferry lands at Körmen harbour in Karaköy, a stage end on this route (about 2 hours, several sailings a day in summer, 875 TL one way on foot in July 2026). Services are fewer in winter.

Money and phone signal

Bring Turkish lira in cash: village pensions, shops and dolmuşes often take cash only. ATMs are in İçmeler and Marmaris, Turunç, Bozburun and Datça; there are none in Bayır, Taşlıca or the bays. Mobile signal is good in villages but patchy in the valleys, the far south of Bozburun and the north coast of Datça.

What to pack

Trail shoes with a good grip, long trousers against thorny scrub, a sun hat, 2 to 3 litres of water capacity plus a filter, a headlamp, a first-aid kit and the GPX track on a phone with a power bank. If you plan to camp at Loryma, Asardibi, Çakal, Mersincik or Domuzçukuru, bring a tent, a stove you can use safely away from the forest, and food for a day.

Safety

In an emergency call 112 (ambulance, fire, gendarmerie, coast guard); the old numbers 155, 156, 110 and 177 also go to 112, and AFAD coordinates rescues on land with the gendarmerie. Never light a fire and report any smoke at once. Start early to avoid the midday heat, keep away from shepherd dogs, and do not rely on reaching a shop or spring that may be closed or dry. The nearest hospitals with an emergency department are in Marmaris and Datça.

The 19 stages

The official Bozburun stages 1 to 9 from İçmeler via Kumlubük, Bayır, Taşlıca, Loryma, Asardibi, Bozburun, Selimiye and the Turgut waterfall to Hisarönü, a road link across the isthmus to Balıkaşıran, then the official Datça stages walked in reverse via Çakal, Emecik, Datça, Karaköy, Mersincik, Knidos, Palamutbükü and Domuzçukuru to Eski Datça. Walking times allow for the steep, rocky paths. Each stage page has a map, elevation profile, places to sleep and eat, and the nearest help.

Emergency, hospitals and services

In an emergency call 112: one number for ambulance, fire, gendarmerie, coast guard and forest fires, free from any phone (the old numbers 155, 156, 110 and 177 also go to 112). Rescues in the countryside are coordinated by AFAD with the gendarmerie search and rescue teams (JAK), and from bays reachable only by boat by the coast guard. Phone signal is patchy in the valleys and on the remote stages. 4 hospitals with an emergency department are within reach, in Marmaris, Datça and Muğla; every stage page lists the nearest one, plus health centres, pharmacies and ATMs on that stage.
