In a mountain emergency call 140 (Alpinnotruf); the Tyrol control centre sends the mountain rescue and the helicopter. 112 works on any phone and network, even without a SIM. Say who you are and your call-back number, where you are (stage, nearest hut, GPS position), what happened and how many people are hurt. If you have no signal, move to a better spot and try 112 again, or ask the hut staff to raise the alarm.
| Number | What it is |
|---|---|
| 140 | Alpine emergency (Alpinnotruf): mountain rescue (Bergrettung) and rescue helicopter, through the Tyrol control centre |
| 112 | European emergency number. Works on any phone and any available network, even without a SIM card |
| 144 | Ambulance and emergency doctor |
| 141 | Doctor on call at night and at weekends (not for emergencies) |
| 1450 | Health advice line: tells you how urgent a problem is and where to go |
The free SOS EU ALP app from the Tyrol control centre (Leitstelle Tirol) sends your GPS position with the alarm. Rescue and helicopter costs can be high: carry insurance that covers search and rescue, for example through Alpine Club membership or the Bergrettung Tirol supporter membership (36 euros a year per family, cover up to 30,000 euros per person).
Before each stage, check the mountain weather from GeoSphere Austria and ask at the hut. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, and the stage from the Bremer to the Innsbrucker Hütte is a fair-weather route. The huts post current trail conditions on the Stubaier Höhenweg Facebook page.

These doctors treat minor injuries and illness during surgery hours. They are not emergency departments. At night and at weekends call 141 for the doctor on call; the Tyrol medical association lists the weekend and holiday duty doctors for Neustift and Fulpmes. The health line 1450 tells you how urgent a problem is.

There are pharmacies in Neustift and Fulpmes. At weekends and on public holidays the duty pharmacy and doctor for the Stubai Valley are listed by the Tyrol medical association (aektirol.at). There are no shops or ATMs between the first and the last hut: carry cash, snacks and any medicine you need; the huts sell meals and lunch packs.
