Coast to Coast Walk emergency & health guide: hospitals, mountain rescue, 999 and 111

The nearest hospital with an emergency department (A&E) for each of the 14 stages, urgent treatment centres, how to call mountain rescue, the rules for walkers in England, and pharmacies and shops near the trail.

In an emergency call 999 or 112 from any phone. For a lost or injured walker on the fells or moors, ask for the Police, then Mountain Rescue: the police call out the volunteer teams of the Lake District, Swaledale and the North York Moors. Say which stage you are on, the nearest village or landmark and, if you can, your grid reference or GPS coordinates, then stay where you are. For urgent medical help that is not life-threatening, call NHS 111.

Emergency numbers

NumberWhat it is
999Police, ambulance, fire and rescue, free from any phone. For a lost or injured walker ask for the Police, then Mountain Rescue: the police call out the volunteer teams of the Lake District (LDSAMRA), Swaledale and the North York Moors (Cleveland, Scarborough and Ryedale).
112European emergency number; it works in the UK and reaches the same centres as 999
111NHS 111: urgent medical help that is not life-threatening; it can book you into an urgent treatment centre or A&E
101Police, non-emergency (Cumbria and North Yorkshire)

If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired, register for emergencySMS before you go: text "register" to 999 and follow the replies. Mobile signal is weak or missing in many Lake District valleys and on the moors, so carry a map and compass and tell someone your plan.

Rules to know

Before you go, check current diversions on the National Trails website and the Met Office and MWIS mountain forecasts. Book rooms and baggage transfer early: small villages have only a few beds.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

England has no duty-pharmacy rota. Use the NHS "Find a pharmacy" service on nhs.uk to check opening hours, or call 111 if you need medicines urgently at night. On the route there are pharmacies in Grasmere, Kirkby Stephen and Richmond; there are none in Ennerdale Bridge, Rosthwaite, Patterdale, Keld, Danby Wiske, Ingleby Cross or Glaisdale, so carry a first-aid and blister kit.
