Kalalau Trail emergency & health guide: hospitals, rescue, 911 and flash floods

How to call for help with no phone signal, the nearest hospital for each of the 2 stages, and the park rules: camping permits, Ha'ena reservations, campsites, stream crossings and the 2026 closures.

In an emergency call 911, or text 911 if a call is not possible; both need a mobile signal. There is no cell coverage on the Napali Coast, so in practice someone must hike out towards Ke'e Beach for help or signal a passing helicopter or boat. Ask for fire and rescue: the Kauai Fire Department lifts injured hikers out with its Air 1 helicopter and hands them to an ambulance at Princeville Airport. Say which stage you are on, the nearest landmark (Hanakapi'ai, Hanakoa, Kalalau) and, if you can, your GPS coordinates.

Emergency numbers

NumberWhat it is
911Police, fire, ambulance and rescue, free from any phone, 24/7. Ask for fire and rescue: the Kauai Fire Department flies trail rescues with its Air 1 helicopter. You can also text 911 anywhere in Hawaii if you cannot call.
808-241-1711Kauai Police Department non-emergency dispatch, 24/7
808-643-3567DLNR enforcement (643-DLNR): report illegal camping, drones or boat drop-offs
808-274-3444Hawaii State Parks, Kauai District Office in Lihue: permits and trail conditions, office hours

There is no cell coverage on the Napali Coast and no ranger on the trail, so in an emergency someone must hike out for help or signal a passing helicopter or boat. A satellite messenger or personal locator beacon is a sensible extra. Tell someone your plans, check the National Weather Service forecast for flood and high-surf warnings, and read the DLNR park notices on the morning you start.

Rules to know
