Cleveland Way emergency & health guide: hospitals, mountain rescue, coastguard, 999 and 111

The nearest hospital with an emergency department (A&E) for each of the 9 stages, urgent treatment centres, how to call mountain rescue and the coastguard, the rules for walkers on the moors and cliffs, and pharmacies and shops near the trail.

In an emergency call 999 or 112 from any phone. For a lost or injured walker on the moors, ask for the Police, then Mountain Rescue: the police call out the volunteer teams, Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team on the northern moors and Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team in the south. On the coast, after a fall from a cliff, if someone is cut off by the tide or in the sea, ask for the Coastguard, who sends coastguard rescue teams and RNLI lifeboats. Say which stage you are on, the nearest village or landmark and, if you can, your grid reference or GPS coordinates, then stay where you are. For urgent medical help that is not life-threatening, call NHS 111.

Emergency numbers

NumberWhat it is
999Police, ambulance, fire, mountain rescue and coastguard, free from any phone. On the moors ask for the Police, then Mountain Rescue (Cleveland MRT in the north, Scarborough and Ryedale MRT in the south). On cliffs, beaches or in the sea ask for the Coastguard, who sends coastguard teams and RNLI lifeboats.
112European emergency number; it works in the UK and reaches the same centres as 999
111NHS 111: urgent medical help that is not life-threatening; it can book you into an urgent treatment centre or A&E
101Police, non-emergency (North Yorkshire Police and Cleveland Police)

If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired, register for emergencySMS before you go: text "register" to 999 and follow the replies. Mobile signal is weak in places on the high moors (Urra Moor, Bloworth Crossing) and in some deep coastal valleys, so carry a map and tell someone your plan.

Rules to know

Before you go, check current diversions on the National Trails website and the Met Office forecast; on the moors the weather changes fast and sea mist is common on the coast. Trains stop at Kildale, Saltburn, Whitby, Scarborough and Filey, and an hourly bus runs along the coast between Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough. Book rooms and baggage transfer early: Sutton Bank, Clay Bank and Kildale have only a few beds.

Urgent treatment centres

Urgent treatment centres treat sprains, simple fractures, cuts and burns. Opening hours differ: the Friarage in Northallerton is open 24 hours, Redcar 8am to midnight (with X-ray), and Whitby 8am to 8pm (X-ray on weekdays and Saturday mornings only). They are not emergency departments. Call NHS 111 first: it can book you in.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

England has no duty-pharmacy rota. Use the NHS "Find a pharmacy" service on nhs.uk to check opening hours, or call 111 if you need medicines urgently at night. There are pharmacies in Helmsley, Saltburn, Whitby, Scarborough and Filey on the route, and in Great Ayton and Guisborough a few kilometres off it; there are none at Sutton Bank, Clay Bank, Kildale, Sandsend or Ravenscar, so carry a first-aid and blister kit.
