Pembrokeshire Coast Path emergency & health guide: hospitals, Coastguard, 999 and 111

The nearest hospital with a 24-hour emergency department (A&E) for each of the 14 stages, minor injury units, how to call the Coastguard and rescue, tides and firing ranges, the rules for walkers in Wales, and pharmacies and shops near the trail.

In an emergency call 999 or 112 from any phone. If you or someone else is in trouble on the cliffs, on a beach or in the sea, ask for the Coastguard (HM Coastguard). For an injury or a lost walker inland, ask for the Ambulance or the Police. Give the grid reference from the small white location plaques on gates, stiles and posts (about every quarter mile) or your GPS coordinates, then stay where you are and keep your phone on. For urgent medical help that is not life-threatening, call NHS 111 Wales on 111.

Emergency numbers

NumberWhat it is
999Coastguard, police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone. On the cliffs, a beach or in the sea ask for the Coastguard; for an injury or a lost walker inland ask for the Ambulance or the Police.
112European emergency number; it works in the UK and reaches the same centres as 999
111NHS 111 Wales: free, 24 hours, for urgent medical help that is not life-threatening; it can tell you which minor injury unit or pharmacy is open
101Dyfed-Powys Police, non-emergency
01646 662367Castlemartin range: recorded information on firing times (Range East)

If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired, register for emergencySMS before you go: text "register" to 999 and follow the replies. Mobile signal is unreliable on much of the coast, so carry a map, note the grid references on the location plaques and tell someone your plan.

Rules to know

Before you go, check the trail news on the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park website, the Wales Coast Path diversions page, the tide tables, the Castlemartin firing notice and the Met Office forecast. The coastal buses (Puffin Shuttle, Strumble Shuttle, Celtic Coaster, Coastal Cruiser) run daily only from late May to late September.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

Wales has no duty-pharmacy rota: pharmacies keep shop hours, and out of hours NHS 111 Wales can tell you where to get urgent medicines. There are pharmacies in Saundersfoot, Tenby, St Davids, Fishguard and Newport, but none in small villages such as Bosherston, Angle, Dale, Marloes, Solva or Trefin, so carry a small first-aid and blister kit and sun cream.
