Paparoa Track emergency & health guide: hospitals, rescue, 111 and PLBs

How to call for help with no phone signal, the nearest hospital for each of the 3 stages, and the rules: hut bookings and fees, no camping, mountain bikers, drones and the flood-prone Pororari valley.

In an emergency call 111 from any phone. For a lost or injured walker ask for the police: NZ Police run search and rescue with LandSAR volunteers and rescue helicopters. There is no phone signal on most of the Paparoa Track, so in a life-threatening emergency activate a personal locator beacon (PLB). Say which section you are on, the nearest hut and, if you can, your GPS coordinates.

There is no phone signal on most of the Paparoa Track, so carry a personal locator beacon (PLB) and use it only in a life-threatening emergency; register a New Zealand beacon free at beacons.org.nz. People with hearing or speech difficulties can register in advance for the 111 TXT service. Leave your plans with someone at home, check the NIWA mountain forecast for Paparoa National Park before you start, and stay in a hut if the weather turns severe.
