Offa's Dyke Path emergency & health guide: hospitals, mountain rescue, 999 and 111

The nearest hospital with an emergency department for each of the 12 stages, minor injury units, how to call mountain rescue on the Black Mountains and the Clwydian Range, the rules for walkers along the Dyke, and pharmacies and shops near the trail.

In an emergency call 999 or 112 from any phone. For a lost or injured walker in the hills, ask for the Police, then Mountain Rescue: the police call out the volunteer teams, such as Longtown Mountain Rescue Team on the Hatterrall Ridge and in the Black Mountains and NEWSAR (North East Wales Search and Rescue) in the Clwydian Range. Say which stage you are on, the nearest village, hill or farm and, if you can, your grid reference or GPS coordinates, then stay where you are. For urgent medical help that is not life-threatening, call 111.

Emergency numbers

NumberWhat it is
999Police, ambulance, fire and rescue, free from any phone. For a lost or injured walker ask for the Police, then Mountain Rescue: the police call out the volunteer teams, such as Longtown Mountain Rescue Team in the Black Mountains and NEWSAR in the Clwydian Range.
112European emergency number; it works in the UK and reaches the same centres as 999
111NHS 111 Wales (in Wales) or NHS 111 (in England): urgent medical help that is not life-threatening; it can direct you to a minor injury unit or emergency department
101Police, non-emergency (Gwent, Dyfed-Powys, North Wales and West Mercia)

If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired, register for emergencySMS before you go: text "register" to 999 and follow the replies. Mobile signal is patchy in the deep valleys and on parts of the ridges, so carry a map and tell someone your plan.

Rules to know

Before you go, check diversions on the National Trail map and the Met Office forecast for the Black Mountains and the Clwydian Range. Buses in the border country are infrequent and thin on Sundays: check Traveline Cymru. Book rooms early, and ask hosts near Pandy, Brompton Crossroads, Buttington Bridge, Chirk Mill, Llandegla and Bodfari about pick-ups from the path.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

Wales and England have no duty-pharmacy rota. Pharmacies keep shop hours; call 111 if you need medicines urgently at night. There are pharmacies in Chepstow, Monmouth, Hay-on-Wye, Kington, Knighton, Welshpool, Chirk, Llangollen, Ruthin and Prestatyn; there are none at Pandy, Montgomery, Brompton Crossroads, Llanymynech, Llandegla or Bodfari, so carry a first-aid and blister kit.
