Season notes from our guide

All paths are open all year, but the best months are April to October. Spring brings fresh green and flowers in the woods, summer is busy but the deep gorges stay cool, and autumn has golden light and colourful leaves. May to October, long weekends and school holidays are the busiest times, so book rooms ahead; from November to Easter rooms are easier to find, but some places close for the winter. In winter, snow and ice can make the steps and ladders dangerous; do not walk after strong storms. Ticks are common: the area is a risk zone for tick-borne encephalitis.
