Yusufeli State Hospital
Yusufeli Devlet Hastanesi
- 24/7 emergency
- Stages 1
Dr. İsrafil Kışla Caddesi, Livane Mahallesi, 08890 Yusufeli, Artvin
The nearest hospital with an emergency department for each of the 3 stages, how mountain rescue works in Turkey, the rules for the national park, and pharmacies and ATMs near the trek.
In an emergency call 112; it covers ambulance, gendarmerie, police and fire. Say which stage you are on, the nearest place (Olgunlar, Dilberdüzü, Deniz Gölü, the Naletleme pass, the Kavrun lakes or Kavrun) and, if you can, your GPS coordinates. Signal is patchy above the villages: if you cannot get through, climb to a ridge or send someone down to Olgunlar or Kavrun, where the villagers can raise the alarm. Rescue is coordinated by AFAD with the gendarmerie (JAK) and UMKE teams and can take many hours; a casualty may have to be carried to a helicopter landing point.
| Service | Number | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| All emergencies | 112 | Single emergency number: ambulance, gendarmerie, police, fire and rescue. For mountain accidents the call centre alerts AFAD, the gendarmerie search and rescue teams (JAK) and the UMKE medical rescue teams. |
| Gendarmerie (old number) | 156 | Merged into 112 in 2021: dial 112 |
| Police (old number) | 155 | Merged into 112 in 2021: dial 112 |
| Fire brigade (old number) | 110 | Merged into 112 in 2021: dial 112 |
| Forest fire (old number) | 177 | Merged into 112: report forest and grass fires on 112 (the valleys around Ayder are forested) |
There are no huts and no hut wardens on this trek. A rescue from Dilberdüzü or the Naletleme pass is organised through 112 and can take many hours, especially in fog. The nearest emergency departments are in Yusufeli (Artvin side, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Yaylalar) and in Çamlıhemşin and Pazar (Rize side, 30 minutes to an hour from Ayder). Carry travel insurance that covers trekking and evacuation, and do not cross the pass alone.
For the national park, contact the Kaçkar Dağları National Park Directorate through the DKMP regional office in Rize (+90 464 214 5547). Yusufeli Municipality and Çamlıhemşin Municipality publish information on Yaylalar, Olgunlar, Kavrun and Ayder, and the kackar.org forum has route reports and GPS tracks. Carry a GPS track or offline map, a headlamp and a first-aid kit, and tell your pension in Yaylalar or Kavrun when you expect to come down.
