Great Glen Way emergency & health guide: hospitals, mountain rescue, 999 and 111

The nearest hospital with an emergency department (A&E) for each of the 6 stages, GP surgeries, how to call mountain rescue or the Loch Ness lifeboat, the rules for walkers and campers by the Caledonian Canal, and pharmacies and shops near the trail.

In an emergency call 999 or 112 from any phone. For a lost or injured walker in the forests or on the high routes, ask for the Police, then Mountain Rescue: Police Scotland call out the volunteer teams, such as Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team around Fort William, and the coastguard helicopter. For anyone in the water or in trouble on Loch Ness, ask for the Coastguard, who launch the Loch Ness RNLI lifeboat from Drumnadrochit. Say which stage you are on, the nearest loch, lock or village and, if you can, your grid reference or GPS coordinates, then stay where you are. For urgent medical advice that is not life-threatening, call NHS 24 on 111.

Emergency numbers

NumberWhat it is
999Police, ambulance, fire, coastguard and mountain rescue, free from any phone. For a lost or injured walker ask for the Police, then Mountain Rescue; for anyone in trouble on Loch Ness or the canal ask for the Coastguard, who launch the Loch Ness RNLI lifeboat.
112European emergency number; it works in the UK and reaches the same centres as 999
111NHS 24: urgent medical advice that is not life-threatening, 24 hours
101Police Scotland, non-emergency
01463 725500Scottish Canals, Inverness office: canal facilities key (£10) and canal questions, office hours

If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired, register for emergencySMS before you go: text "register" to 999 and follow the replies. Mobile signal is weak in parts of the forests above Loch Lochy and Loch Ness and on the high routes, so carry a charged phone and an offline map and tell someone your plan.

Rules to know

Before you go, check the Great Glen Way pages of The Highland Council and the forecast (MWIS or the Met Office). The Citylink 919 bus runs along the A82 between Fort William and Inverness several times a day and stops near most stage ends, but not at Gairlochy. Midges and ticks are worst from June to August: carry repellent and a tick remover.

GP surgeries and minor injuries

Belford Hospital in Fort William has a minor injuries unit next to its A&E. Between Fort William and Inverness the only medical help is at GP surgeries in Fort Augustus (Cill Chuimein Medical Centre) and Drumnadrochit, open in surgery hours only; they are not emergency departments. Out of hours call NHS 24 on 111.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

Scotland has no duty-pharmacy rota. Pharmacies keep shop hours, and NHS 24 (111) gives advice at any time. There are pharmacies in Fort William (Boots and Well on the High Street, and Well in Caol near the trail), Fort Augustus, Drumnadrochit and Inverness; there are none at Gairlochy, South Laggan, Invergarry or Invermoriston, so carry a first-aid and blister kit, your regular medicines, and midge and tick repellent plus a tick remover.
