East Coast Trail emergency & health guide: hospitals, search and rescue, 911 and 811

The nearest hospital with an emergency department for each of the 16 stages, urgent care and clinics, how search and rescue works, the rules for hikers on the East Coast Trail, and pharmacies and shops near the trail.

In an emergency call 911 from any phone. For a lost or injured hiker ask for the police: the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary covers St. John's and the northeast Avalon, and the RCMP covers the Southern Shore. The police call out Rovers Search and Rescue, a volunteer team, and the Coast Guard for the cliffs and the sea. Say which path you are on, the nearest trailhead, campsite or headland and, if you can, your GPS coordinates; then stay where you are and keep warm. Large parts of the Motion and Spout paths have no signal, so carry a satellite messenger or PLB.

NumberWhat it is
911Police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone. For a lost or injured hiker ask for the police, who call out Rovers Search and Rescue and, on the coast, the Coast Guard.

Rules to know

Before you go, check the ECTA path advisories and the Environment Canada forecast for St. John's and the Southern Shore. There is no hiker shuttle: arrange taxis, Uber or host pickups in advance, especially for Cappahayden, about 90 minutes by road from St. John's. Book outport B&Bs early: many have only a few rooms and open only in summer.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

Canada has no duty-pharmacy rota; pharmacies keep shop hours and the 811 HealthLine gives advice at any time. There are pharmacies in Pouch Cove, Torbay, St. John's and Bay Bulls. South of Bay Bulls there are few shops and none sell much outdoor gear, so carry a full first-aid and blister kit, insect repellent for the blackflies in June and July, and spare stove gas bought in St. John's.
