Ausangate Circuit emergency & health guide: hospitals, rescue, altitude and fees

How to call for help with almost no phone signal at 5,000 m, the nearest health centre and hospital for each of the 5 stages, and the local rules: community fees, camping, sacred lakes and guard dogs.

In an emergency call 105 for the police or 106 for a SAMU ambulance; both are free. For a lost or injured trekker ask for the police, who organise searches with mountain units and sometimes an army helicopter. There is almost no mobile signal on the circuit, so use a satellite messenger or PLB, and call your travel insurer, which arranges and pays for private helicopter evacuation. Say which stage you are on, the nearest lake or pass and your GPS coordinates.

Emergency numbers

NumberWhat it is
105Police (Policía Nacional del Perú), free, 24/7. For a lost or injured trekker ask for the police: they organise searches.
106SAMU, the Ministry of Health ambulance service, free, 24/7. Ambulances reach Tinki and Pacchanta, not the passes.
116Fire brigade (Bomberos), also for rescues and road accidents
+51 980 122 335Tourist Police (POLTUR) national line: theft reports and help in English
+51 944 492 314iPerú tourist information and assistance (WhatsApp)

There is almost no mobile signal on the Ausangate Circuit and no organised mountain rescue in the Cordillera Vilcanota. Carry a satellite messenger or PLB, and travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation above 5,000 m: in a serious accident your insurer arranges the helicopter. The new 911 number was still a pilot in Lima in 2026, so use 105 or 106. Leave your route and return date with someone, and never walk alone.

Health posts and clinics

Tinki has a small health post for first aid and oxygen, and Ocongate, 20 minutes away by road, has a health centre with a doctor that stabilises patients and sends serious cases to Cusco. Neither has a confirmed 24-hour emergency service. The hospitals with a 24-hour emergency department are in Cusco, about 3 hours from Tinki.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

Tinki and Ocongate have small boticas with basic medicines, but there is nothing between Upis and Pacchanta and no duty-pharmacy rota in rural Peru. Buy everything in Cusco before you go: altitude medicine on a doctor's prescription, painkillers, rehydration salts, a blister kit, SPF 50 sunscreen and water treatment.
