St. Johann in Tirol District Hospital
Bezirkskrankenhaus St. Johann in Tirol
- 24/7 emergency
- Stages 1, 2
Bahnhofstraße 14, 6380 St. Johann in Tirol
The nearest hospital with a 24/7 emergency department for each of the 24 stages, Austrian rescue numbers, what a rescue costs, the 2026 path closures and hut rules, and pharmacies, ATMs and bus stops along the trail.
In an emergency call 140 (alpine rescue) or 112; 112 works on any phone and any network, which matters near the Eng and Hinterriss, where phones often switch to a German network. In Tyrol both numbers reach the Leitstelle Tirol, which sends the Bergrettung, the ambulance and the helicopter. Say which stage you are on, the nearest hut or pass and, if you can, your GPS coordinates. If you have no signal, the hut staff can raise the alarm.
| Number | What it is |
|---|---|
| 140 | Alpine emergency (Bergrettung) in Austria. In Tyrol it reaches the Leitstelle Tirol, which sends the mountain rescue and the helicopter. |
| 112 | European emergency number. Works on any phone and network, also on a German network near the Eng and Hinterriss. |
| 144 | Ambulance and emergency doctor (Rettung). |
| 141 | Doctor on call at night and at weekends, for illness that is not an emergency. |
| +43 512 587828 | Alpine information service of the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV): routes and conditions before you go. Not an emergency line. |
In Austria public health insurance pays only a small part of a mountain rescue; most of the helicopter and rescue cost, often several thousand euros, is billed to you. Alpine club membership or a supporting membership of the Bergrettung covers search and rescue, so carry one of them or travel insurance that covers mountain rescue.
Before each stage, check the mountain weather from GeoSphere Austria or the huts. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August, and early in the season hard snowfields can lie in the Schlauchkar (stage 11), below the Stempeljoch (stage 12) and in the Lechtal Alps.

At night and on Sundays one pharmacy (Apotheke) in each area is on duty; the Austrian Chamber of Pharmacists' finder on apotheker.or.at shows which, and every pharmacy shows the one on duty on its door. Pharmacies are in St. Johann, Kufstein, Brixlegg, Jenbach and Maurach, Innsbruck, Zirl, Seefeld, Ehrwald, Nassereith and St. Anton. Between the valley towns there are no shops: carry snacks, blister care and cash, as several huts do not take cards.
