Whale Trail emergency & health guide: hospitals, rescue and reserve rules

How to call for help with patchy phone signal, the nearest hospital for each of the 5 stages, and the reserve rules: group bookings, porterage, tides, baboons and the missile test range.

In an emergency call 10177 for an ambulance or 112 from a mobile. For a hiker who is lost or cannot walk out, call Wilderness Search and Rescue on 021 937 0300; for anyone in the sea, call the NSRI on 087 094 9774. Then call the De Hoop reserve office on 028 542 1114 so staff can guide rescuers on the reserve roads. Signal is patchy: try the high ground on Potberg, the hard dunes or the shore. Say which day you are on, the nearest hut and, if you can, your GPS coordinates.

Mobile signal on the Whale Trail is sporadic: you get it mainly on the high parts of Potberg, on the hard dunes and along the coast, where earlier hikers sometimes mark signal spots with piled stones. Keep the group leader's phone on, write down the after-hours numbers given at the briefing, tell someone at home your plans and carry a first aid kit. Rescue from the remote coast can take hours.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

There is no pharmacy or shop at Potberg, on the trail or at Koppie Alleen; the Potberg office has only a curio shop. Buy medicines, blister plasters, antihistamines, sunscreen and insect repellent in Bredasdorp or Swellendam before you arrive. Do not count on charging your phone in the huts: carry a power bank.
