Tour of Monte Rosa emergency & health guide: hospitals, mountain rescue, 112 and 144

The nearest hospital with an emergency department for each of the 9 stages, rescue numbers for Switzerland and Italy, the rules to know (Theodul Glacier, Europaweg detour, camping) and clinics, pharmacies, ATMs and bus stops along the trail.

In an emergency call 112; it works in Switzerland and Italy on any phone, also without credit. On the Swiss part (Zermatt to the Theodul Pass, and the Monte Moro Pass back to Zermatt) you can also call 144, the Valais rescue centre, which sends the Air Zermatt helicopters. Say which stage you are on, the nearest hut or village and, if you can, your GPS coordinates. If you cannot speak, send an SMS: in Valais to +41 79 807 41 46, in the Aosta Valley to +39 339 990 9018.

In Switzerland helicopter rescue is charged: a Rega mission costs on average about CHF 4,500, and Rega patronage (CHF 40 a year) can cover costs your insurance does not. In the Aosta Valley and Piedmont a rescue that ends in hospital care is paid by the health service, but a rescue of an uninjured person or a call judged unjustified can be charged to you. Carry insurance that covers hiking and mountain rescue in both countries.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

At night and on Sundays a duty pharmacy covers each area: in Valais call 0848 200 300, which also finds the duty doctor; in Italy every pharmacy (farmacia) shows the duty pharmacy (farmacia di turno) on its door. There are no pharmacies at the huts, so carry a small first-aid kit. Switzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF) and Italy the euro: carry some cash in both, as not every hut takes cards.
