Teton Crest Trail emergency & health guide: hospitals, rescue, 911 and park rules

How to call for help with little or no phone signal, the nearest hospital for each of the 4 stages, and the rules: backcountry permits, camping zones, bear canisters, no campfires and snow on the passes.

In an emergency call 911 from any phone. Inside Grand Teton National Park the call reaches park rangers, who run backcountry rescues, often by helicopter; on the Forest Service land around Phillips Pass, Fox Creek Pass and Alaska Basin the county sheriff and search and rescue may respond. Signal is patchy on the crest and absent in the canyons, so use a satellite messenger or personal locator beacon if you cannot call. Say which pass, lake or camping zone you are near and give your GPS coordinates.

Phone signal on the Teton Crest Trail is patchy and unpredictable, so the NPS advises a satellite communication device; carry one and know how to send an SOS. Leave your plan with someone at home, check the NPS backcountry and trail conditions page and the forecast before you start, and cross passes early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms.
