Southland Hospital – Emergency Department
- 24/7 emergency
- Stages 1, 2, 3
Kew Road, Kingswell, Invercargill 9812
How to call for help with no phone signal, the nearest help for each of the 3 stages, and the park rules: bookings, fees, campsites, water and wildlife.
In an emergency call 111 from any phone; calls to 112 and 911 are also put through to 111. For a lost or injured tramper ask for the police: New Zealand Police run land search and rescue, often with a helicopter. There is no mobile signal on the track, only in Oban, so in a life-threatening emergency activate a personal locator beacon (PLB). Say which stage you are on, the nearest hut or bay and, if you can, your GPS coordinates.
| Number | What it is |
|---|---|
| 111 | Police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone, 24/7. For a lost or injured tramper ask for the police: they run search and rescue. Calls to 112 and 911 are put through to 111. |
| 105 | Police non-emergency line |
| +64 3 219 1098 | Stewart Island Health Centre, Oban: nurse-led clinic 10:00–12:30 daily; rural nurses on call 24/7 (call 111 first in an emergency) |
| 0800 611 116 | Healthline: free medical advice from a nurse when it is not an emergency, 24/7 |
Mobile coverage on Stewart Island is limited to Oban, so carry a personal locator beacon (PLB) and use it only in a life-threatening emergency. You can hire one, with a gear locker, at the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre on Main Road in Oban (Mon–Fri 8:30–16:00, Sat 9:15–14:15). Texting 111 works only for deaf or speech-impaired users who have registered. Leave your plans with someone at home, sign every hut book and check the NIWA forecast for Rakiura National Park before you start.
