Peaks of the Balkans emergency & health guide: hospitals, rescue numbers and border permits

The nearest hospital with an emergency department for each of the 10 stages, emergency numbers for Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro, the cross-border permits, and clinics, pharmacies and ATMs along the trail.

In an emergency call 112; it works in all three countries. For an ambulance you can also call 127 in Albania, 194 in Kosovo and 124 in Montenegro. Say which stage you are on, the nearest village or katun and, if you can, your GPS coordinates. There is no mountain rescue service like in the Alps and many stretches have no signal: if you cannot get through, send someone to the nearest village or guesthouse, whose hosts can raise the alarm.

Rescue numbers by country

CountryNumberWhat it is
All three112European emergency number: ambulance, police and fire. In Kosovo it is the unified emergency number; in remote parts of Albania and Montenegro the direct numbers below can be more reliable.
Albania127Ambulance (Theth, Valbonë, Çerem, Dobërdol)
Albania129Police (128 is the fire brigade)
Kosovo194Ambulance (Milishevc to Kuçishtë)
Kosovo192Police (193 is the fire brigade)
Montenegro124Ambulance (Babino Polje, Plav, Vusanje)
Montenegro122Police (123 is the fire brigade)

None of the three countries has a mountain rescue service like those in the Alps. A rescue is organised through 112 and the police and can take many hours; the nearest hospitals (Peja, Berane, Shkodër) are 1 to 3 hours by road from the trail. Carry travel insurance that covers hiking and evacuation, and do not walk the remote stages alone.

Rules to know

Before you set off, the Peja Tourist Information Centre (+383 39 423 949) and the Plav Tourist Organisation (+382 51 250 151) give advice on the Kosovo and Montenegro sections; the official trail site answers at info@peaksofthebalkans.com. Much of the trail has no mobile signal: carry a map or GPS track, a headlamp and a first-aid kit, and tell your next guesthouse when you expect to arrive.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

Pharmacies are only in the towns: Plav (on the trail), Gusinje, Peja, Bajram Curri and Shkodër. There are none in the mountain villages, so carry a first-aid kit, blister care and your own medicines. Carry cash for the whole trek: Albania uses the lek (euros are widely accepted in Theth and Valbonë), Kosovo and Montenegro the euro, and guesthouses rarely take cards. ATMs are in Plav, Gusinje, Peja and Bajram Curri, with one or two in Theth and Valbonë.
