Bludenz Regional Hospital
Landeskrankenhaus Bludenz
- 24/7 emergency
- Stages 1, 2
Spitalgasse 13, 6700 Bludenz, Vorarlberg
The nearest hospital with an emergency service for each of the 7 stages, emergency numbers for Austria and Germany, nature park rules, and doctors, pharmacies and ATMs along the trail.
In an emergency call 112; it works on any phone in Austria and Germany. In Austria 144 goes straight to the ambulance service and 140 to mountain rescue (Bergrettung). Say which stage you are on, the nearest village or bridge and, if you can, your GPS coordinates. The trail is never far from a village or road, so if you have no signal walk to the nearest house or hotel and ask them to call.
| Country | Number | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Both | 112 | European emergency number: ambulance, fire, police and mountain rescue. In Germany (the last kilometres into Füssen) it also calls the Bergwacht. |
| Austria | 144 | Ambulance (Formarinsee to Pinswang) |
| Austria | 140 | Alpine emergency: mountain rescue (Bergrettung) |
| Austria | 133 | Police (122 is the fire brigade) |
| Austria | 1450 | Health advice line, free and 24/7, for problems that are not emergencies |
| Germany | 110 | Police |
| Germany | 116117 | On-call doctor when practices are closed (not for emergencies) |
The hospitals are in Reutte (Lechtal and Reutte basin), Füssen (last stage) and Bludenz (Lech and Warth, about 50 km by road over the Flexen pass); serious cases on the first stages are usually flown out by helicopter. EU, EEA, Swiss and UK visitors get public health care with an EHIC or GHIC card; a helicopter rescue in the Austrian mountains is usually charged to you, so carry insurance that covers mountain rescue.
Before you set off, the tourist offices help with rooms and buses: Lech Zürs (+43 5583 2161-0), Warth-Schröcken (+43 5583 3515-0), Lechtal (+43 5634 5315), Naturparkregion Reutte (+43 5672 62336) and Füssen (+49 8362 9385-0); the trail itself answers at info@lechweg.com. Check the mountain weather before the first two stages: afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.
