Kungsleden emergency & health guide: hospitals, mountain rescue, 112 and 1177
How to call mountain rescue, the nearest hospital for each of the 7 stages, medical advice by phone, the right of public access and the Abisko National Park rules.
In an emergency call 112 from any phone and ask for the police: in the Swedish mountains the police lead all rescues and call out the volunteer mountain rescue (fjällräddning), usually by helicopter to an ambulance. Some STF huts have an emergency phone, and hut hosts can raise the alarm. Say which stage you are on, the nearest hut and, if you can, your GPS coordinates.

Mobile coverage is missing on long parts of the trail, so do not rely on your phone. Tell someone your route and dates before you start, and check the SMHI forecast. Some STF huts have an emergency phone connected to the police and mountain rescue.
Rules to know
- Right of public access (allemansrätten): outside Abisko National Park you may camp for a night or two almost anywhere, away from houses. Do not damage anything, take all your rubbish with you and follow any fire ban.
- Abisko National Park (Abisko to Abiskojaure): camping is allowed only at the designated sites at Abisko Turiststation, Nissonjokk and Abiskojaure; fires only at designated places (camping stoves are fine); dogs on a leash and only on marked trails and near the huts.
- STF huts: open 18 June to 13 September in 2026 (24 June to 19 September in 2027), plus a late-winter season. Book beds online; tent guests pay a service fee to use the kitchen. Cards and cash (kronor or euros) are accepted in the huts; Kebnekaise Fjällstation takes cards only. Shops only at Abiskojaure, Alesjaure and Sälka.
- Reindeer herding area: keep dogs on a leash all year and keep well away from reindeer. Rivers on the trail are crossed on bridges; do not ford big rivers off the trail.
- Mosquitoes are worst on warm, calm days in July: bring repellent and a head net. From late May to mid-July the sun does not set, so bring an eye mask.
- Carry out your light rubbish (soft plastic, paper): rest huts and wind shelters have no bins. Hand in sorted waste at the huts and your rubbish bag at Abisko or Kebnekaise.

There is no pharmacy on the trail, in Abisko or in Nikkaluokta; the nearest pharmacies are in Kiruna. Sweden has no duty-pharmacy rota, so bring all your medicines, a blister kit and mosquito repellent from home, and call 1177 for advice. The huts have no electricity: carry a power bank.
