Huayhuash Circuit emergency & health guide: altitude, hospitals, rescue and community rules

How to call for help with almost no phone signal and no mountain rescue, how to deal with altitude sickness on passes up to 5,000 m, the nearest hospital for each of the 9 stages, and the community fees and 2026 rules.

In an emergency call 105 for the police and ask for the Policía de Alta Montaña (USAM), the police mountain rescue unit, or 106 for an ambulance (SAMU); 116 is the fire and rescue brigade. 911 was only being tested in Lima in 2026 and 112 does not work in Peru. There is no signal on most of the circuit, so carry a satellite messenger and send an SOS with it in a life-threatening emergency. Tell your guide or the nearest campsite family: they can bring a horse to take you down to the road at Llámac, Quartelhuain, Huayllapa or Queropalca. A helicopter must be arranged through your travel insurance and depends on the weather. Say where you are, the nearest camp or pass and, if you can, your GPS coordinates.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

There is no pharmacy on the circuit and Peru has no duty-pharmacy rota here. Chiquián and Cajatambo have small pharmacies; Huaraz has many. Buy everything in Huaraz before you start: altitude medicine (acetazolamide needs a doctor's advice), treatment for stomach bugs, rehydration salts, a blister kit, sunscreen and lip balm. The campsites have no power: carry a power bank or a small solar panel.
