CHU Félix Guyon (CHU site Nord), Saint-Denis
CHU de La Réunion – site Nord Félix Guyon
- 24/7 emergency
- Stages 1, 2
Allée des Topazes, Bellepierre, 97400 Saint-Denis
The nearest hospital with a 24/7 emergency department for each of the 11 stages, rescue numbers for La Réunion, trail closures, cyclone and volcano alerts, national park rules, and pharmacies, ATMs and bus stops along the trail.
In an emergency call 15 for the SAMU (medical emergencies) or 112 from any phone. For mountain rescue you can also call 17: the gendarmerie sends its mountain unit (PGHM) and a helicopter. Say which stage you are on, the nearest îlet, gîte or signpost and, if you can, your GPS coordinates. If you have no signal, walk to the nearest gîte: the keepers can raise the alarm.
| Number | What it is |
|---|---|
| 15 | SAMU, medical emergencies: ambulance, emergency doctor and medical helicopter, 24/7 and free |
| 112 | European emergency number. Works on any mobile, also without a local SIM, and reaches the emergency services |
| 17 | Gendarmerie. For mountain rescue it alerts the PGHM (Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne), which rescues walkers by helicopter |
| 0262 93 09 30 | PGHM La Réunion, direct line of the mountain-rescue unit |
| 18 | Fire and rescue service (pompiers) |
In Mafate there are no roads, so an injured walker is flown out; the helicopter needs reasonable weather, and clouds often close in from late morning. EU and EEA visitors get public health care with an EHIC card; everyone else should carry travel insurance that covers rescue and repatriation.
Before each stage, check Météo-France La Réunion for the mountain forecast and any cyclone or heavy-rain warning, the ONF map of open trails, and, for the volcano stages, the prefecture's Piton de la Fournaise status. Start early: clouds and rain usually build up from late morning.

These clinics treat minor injuries and illness during their opening hours. They are not emergency departments. In an emergency call 15, and the SAMU will send you to the right hospital.

At night and on Sundays a duty pharmacy (pharmacie de garde) covers each area: call 3237 to find it. There are pharmacies in Saint-Denis, Dos d'Âne, Cilaos, the Plaine des Cafres and Basse Vallée, but none in Mafate or at the high refuges, so carry a full first-aid kit and your own medicines. Shops are few and there are no cash machines in Mafate: carry snacks and cash.
