Stage 8 of the GR R2 Réunion covers 8.0 km from Cilaos to Caverne Dufour, with 1,404 m of ascent and 128 m of descent. The highest point is 2,493 m. Allow about 4.5 hours of walking, plus breaks.

Refuge de la Caverne Dufour
The only bed on stage 8: AGGM refuge at about 2,400 m below the Piton des Neiges summit, with 48 dorm beds plus bungalow tents. No running water, no sockets, bring a sleeping bag and water; book meals 48 hours ahead. Camping near the refuge is not allowed.

Book gîtes ahead on book.reunion.fr or by phone, and book dinner and breakfast at least 48 hours ahead. Bring cash: many gîtes in Mafate do not take cards.
