Bruneck Hospital
Krankenhaus Bruneck / Ospedale di Brunico
- 24/7 emergency
- Stages 1, 2, 3
Spitalstraße/Via Ospedale 11, 39031 Bruneck (BZ); emergency department ground floor, wing C
The nearest hospital with a 24/7 emergency service for each of the 11 stages, rescue numbers for South Tyrol and the Veneto, park rules, and pharmacies, ATMs and bus stops along the trail.
In an emergency call 112; it works on any phone. In the Veneto (from Lagazuoi to Belluno) 118 goes straight to the medical emergency and helicopter service. Say which stage you are on, the nearest rifugio and, if you can, your GPS coordinates. If you have no signal, the rifugio staff can raise the alarm.
| Number | What it is |
|---|---|
| 112 | European emergency number. In South Tyrol (Braies to Fanes) it is the single emergency centre that sends the ambulance, helicopter and mountain rescue (Bergrettung). |
| 118 | Medical emergencies and helicopter rescue in the Veneto (Lagazuoi to Belluno), working with the Soccorso Alpino (CNSAS). 112 also works there. |
| 116117 | Non-urgent medical help in the province of Belluno (on-call and tourist doctors), free and 24/7 |
The free GeoResQ app from the Italian mountain rescue service (CNSAS) can send your GPS position with an alarm. In the Veneto, a rescue that turns out not to be needed can be charged to you, so carry insurance that covers mountain rescue.
Before each stage, check the mountain weather: ARPAV Dolomiti Meteo for the Veneto and the South Tyrol weather service (Wetter Südtirol) for Braies and Fanes. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.

At night and on Sundays a duty pharmacy (farmacia di turno) covers each area. In South Tyrol the rota is on the province's health website; in the province of Belluno, ULSS 1 Dolomiti posts it weekly. Any pharmacy also shows which one is on duty. Shops are rare between Lago di Braies and Belluno: carry snacks and cash, as most rifugi sell food but not all take cards.
