Stage 5 of the Alta Via 1 covers 13.2 km from Rifugio Nuvolau to Rifugio Città di Fiume, with 510 m of ascent and 1,134 m of descent. The highest point is 2,546 m. Allow about 5 hours of walking, plus breaks.

Rifugio Gianni Palmieri
CAI Cortina refuge at 2,046 m on Lago Federa, with 51 beds, half board and a sauna. In 2026 it opened on 15 June and stays open until 25 October, with overnight stays until 16 October. The winter bivouac is closed this winter because of building work.
Hotel Ristorante Passo Giau
Small private hotel and restaurant at Passo Giau (2,236 m) on the road, with 6 rooms. Open in summer and winter.
CAI Fiume refuge at 1,918 m with 4 rooms (20 beds, no double rooms) and half board. Open from mid-June to the end of September. Dinner and overnight stays only with a booking; you must bring your own sleeping-bag liner. The landline is from the Cortina tourism listing.
Checked online in October 2026. Places marked "listed by the tourist office" are on an official tourism listing but could not be confirmed on their own website. Most rifugi open from mid or late June to the end of September. Book ahead for July and August; many ask for a deposit.
