Daylight
Calculating…
Getting caught out by darkness is easy to avoid if you know when the light goes. Pick a trail stage or your location and a date to see sunrise, sunset and the hours of daylight. The planner then gives the latest time to start, so you finish with an hour to spare.

Open in Outest →Sunrise and sunset are calculated in your browser with the NOAA solar position method, for the start point and the date. Times are shown in the local time zone of the start point.
latest start = sunset − estimated time with breaks − 1 hour
The time with breaks comes from the hiking time calculation (distance ÷ 4 + ascent ÷ 600, adjusted for pace and pack, + 15 %). The planner also shows civil dusk, when the sun is 6° below the horizon.
Times are for a flat horizon. In a deep valley or below a high ridge, the sun goes earlier.
It is sunset, minus your estimated time with breaks, minus one hour of margin. If you start later than this, you may finish in the dark.
The NOAA method is accurate to about a minute for most places, for a flat horizon. Mountains block the sun earlier, so in a deep valley it gets dark sooner on the ground.
Some. The planner shows civil dusk, when the sun is 6° below the horizon; until then you can usually still see the path. Do not plan on it: carry a headlamp on every hike.
Then the hike is too long for the daylight at your pace. Start at first light with a headlamp, shorten the route, or split it over two days.
