How to call for help where there is no mountain rescue, how to deal with altitude sickness, the nearest hospital for each of the 4 stages, and the rules for Machu Picchu tickets, circuits and what you can take in.
In an emergency call 106 for an ambulance (SAMU) or 105 for the police; 116 is the fire and rescue brigade. 911 was only being tested in Lima in 2026 and 112 does not work in Peru. There is no mountain rescue on the Salkantay Trek: tell your guide or the nearest camp family, who carry oxygen and first aid and can bring a horse to take you down to the road at Soraypampa or Collpapampa. A helicopter must be arranged through your travel insurance, so check it covers trekking to 4,700 m and evacuation. Say where you are, the nearest village and, if you can, your GPS coordinates.
| Number | What it is |
|---|---|
| 106 | SAMU: ambulance and emergency medical care (Ministry of Health), free, 24/7. Ambulances reach only the road ends. |
| 105 | Policía Nacional del Perú: police emergencies, theft and missing people, 24/7. |
| 116 | Bomberos: volunteer fire and rescue brigade, 24/7. |
| +51 944 492 314 | iPerú tourist assistance on WhatsApp (PromPerú): help and complaints for travellers. |
| +51 84 221213 | O2 Medical Network, private travellers' clinics in Cusco and Aguas Calientes, 24/7 call centre; rescue and evacuation usually billed to travel insurance. |
There is no mountain rescue on the Salkantay Trek and almost no phone signal between Soraypampa and Collpapampa. Guides and camp families carry oxygen and first aid and can bring horses to the road; a helicopter is only possible through private travel insurance, so check that yours covers trekking to 4,700 m and evacuation. Spend at least 2 to 3 days in Cusco before you start, and go down at once if you have a bad headache, vomiting, confusion or breathlessness at rest.

There is no clinic on the high section. The nearest health centre below Soraypampa is in Mollepata; on the jungle side there is a small pharmacy at La Playa and a health centre in Santa Teresa. In Aguas Calientes the public Centro de Salud Machupicchu is open 24 hours and O2 Medical Network runs a private travellers' clinic with a hyperbaric chamber (+51 84 221213, 24/7). Serious cases are taken to Cusco.

There is no pharmacy between Mollepata and La Playa. La Playa has a small pharmacy and Aguas Calientes has several, one of them open 24 hours. Buy altitude medicine (ask a doctor about acetazolamide), rehydration salts, a blister kit and strong insect repellent in Cusco before you start. Camps have little power: carry a power bank.
