Basic, free 4-bunk DOC hut with a wood fire, mattresses and a long-drop toilet, 14 km past Stern Valley; no gas, cookware or toilet paper. Not bookable, first come, first served; Goat Creek must be forded and can be impassable after heavy rain.
Mōkihinui Forks Hut
Basic, free DOC hut with 8 bunks inside and 2 on the porch, a wood fire, mattresses and a long-drop toilet, 3 km before Specimen Point; bring a stove and toilet paper. Not bookable, first come, first served.
Trust hut above the Mokihinui River with 14 bunks, two private summer sleepouts (Sept–May) and one tent site, gas cookers, cookware, mattresses and an emergency phone to NZ Police. Must be booked online; also bookable for one night in-and-out from Seddonville.
Checked online in October 2026. Places marked "not confirmed by the operator" are listed on OpenStreetMap or in tourism listings but could not be checked on an official page. The main huts on the Old Ghost Road are run by the Mōkihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust: booked online, with bunks and mattresses, gas cookers, cookware, rainwater and an emergency phone, but no showers or power. Tent sites give no access to the hut, and the DOC huts at Goat Creek and Mōkihinui Forks have no gas or cookware.
