Lost Coast Trail emergency & health guide: hospitals, rescue, 911 and tides

How to call for help with almost no phone signal, the nearest hospital for each of the 3 stages, and the rules: wilderness permits, tide zones, bear canisters, fire restrictions and wildlife.

In an emergency call 911 from any phone. For a lost or injured hiker ask for the sheriff: the Humboldt County Sheriff coordinates search and rescue, and the US Coast Guard and local volunteer fire departments carry out frequent rescues on this coast, often by helicopter. The BLM has no search and rescue team and there is almost no mobile signal, so use a satellite messenger or your phone's satellite SOS. Say which stage you are on, the nearest creek mouth and your GPS coordinates.

Mobile coverage on the Lost Coast Trail is very limited to none, and the BLM has no search and rescue team: carry a satellite messenger (for example an inReach) or a phone with satellite SOS, and plan to get yourself out. Leave your plan and tide times with someone at home, download the NOAA tide predictions for Shelter Cove (station 9418024) and check the marine forecast before you start.
