Independence Way emergency & health guide: hospitals, rescue and 112

The nearest hospital with an emergency service for each of the 6 stages, how to call for help, forest and fire rules, and pharmacies and shops near the trail.

In an emergency call 112 from any phone, free, also without a SIM card. There is no separate mountain rescue number: 112 sends the ambulance, the gendarmerie (jandarma), which is responsible for the countryside, and AFAD search and rescue. Say that a walker is lost or injured, give the stage, the nearest village and your GPS coordinates, then stay where you are and keep your phone on. Operators speak Turkish; speak slowly or ask for English.

Emergency numbers

NumberWhat it is
112The single emergency number in Turkey: ambulance, gendarmerie (rural police), police, fire brigade, forest fire and AFAD search and rescue. Free from any phone, also without a SIM card. For a lost or injured walker say "kayıp yürüyüşçü" or "yaralı yürüyüşçü", the nearest village and your GPS position.

+90 366 811 40 37İnebolu State Hospital, 2 km from the start

Mobile signal is good in the towns and along the main road but drops in the deep forest valleys; if a call fails, climb to higher ground or walk towards the nearest village. Tell your hotel or someone at home your plan for each day, especially before the camping nights at Çuhadoruğu and Ödemiş.

Rules to know

The waymarks date from 2007–2008 and are faded or missing in places, especially in the forest: carry the GPS track and an offline map. After rain the cart road is deep in mud. Bring Turkish lira in cash for village shops and taxis; there are ATMs in İnebolu and Kastamonu.

Small state hospitals and health centres

The state hospitals in İnebolu and Küre are small: they treat sprains, cuts, falls and minor fractures and stabilise serious cases before sending them to the Kastamonu Training and Research Hospital. Seydiler has only a family health centre, open on weekdays, and the villages have nothing. For anything serious, call 112 rather than looking for a doctor.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

Turkey has a duty-pharmacy system (nöbetçi eczane): in each town one pharmacy stays open at night, on Sundays and on holidays, and the rota is posted on every pharmacy door and online (search "Kastamonu nöbetçi eczane"). There are pharmacies in İnebolu, Küre, Seydiler and Kastamonu and none in the villages on the way, so carry a first-aid and blister kit and any medicines you need.
