Hump Ridge Track emergency & health guide: hospitals, rescue, 111 and PLBs

How to call for help where the phone may not work, the nearest hospital for each of the 3 stages, and the track rules: booking and check-in, tides, closed viaducts, drones and dogs.

In an emergency call 111; the call is free, even from a mobile with no credit. For a lost or injured walker ask for the police: New Zealand Police coordinate land search and rescue, usually with a rescue helicopter. Mobile signal is unreliable on the coast and in the forest, so in a life-threatening emergency activate a personal locator beacon (PLB). Say which day you are on, the nearest landmark (Luncheon Rock, Okaka Lodge, a viaduct, Port Craig) and, if you can, your GPS coordinates. The lodge managers at Okaka and Port Craig can also raise the alarm.

People who are deaf or have a speech impairment can register for 111 TXT before the trip. Tell someone at home your plans, check the NIWA forecast for Okaka Lodge and the tide times before you start, and keep to the marked track.
