GR10 emergency & health guide: hospitals, mountain rescue, 112 and 15

The nearest hospital with an emergency department for each of the 55 stages, French rescue numbers and how mountain rescue works, national park rules, 2026 closures, and pharmacies, cash machines and bus stops along the trail.

In an emergency call 112; it works on any phone and any network with signal. 15 goes straight to the SAMU medical emergency service. Mountain rescue in the French Pyrenees is done by the gendarmerie (PGHM) and the CRS, usually by helicopter. Say 'secours en montagne', which stage you are on, the nearest refuge, pass or lake and, if you can, your GPS coordinates. If you have no signal, move to higher ground or ask refuge staff to raise the alarm.

Rescue numbers

NumberWhat it is
112European emergency number, free from any phone. In the mountains it alerts the gendarmerie mountain rescue (PGHM) or the CRS and the rescue helicopter. Also works on the Spanish side of the border.
15SAMU: medical emergencies in France; a doctor answers and sends an ambulance, a medical team or a helicopter.
18Fire and rescue service (sapeurs-pompiers), also for accidents in villages and on roads.
17Police and gendarmerie.
114Emergency number by text message or app, for deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

Mountain rescue by the state services (PGHM, CRS) is free in France, but repatriation, private clinics and transport home are not: carry insurance that covers hiking. EU, EEA, Swiss and UK visitors get public health care with an EHIC or GHIC card. In the Cerdagne the nearest emergency department is the cross-border Hospital de Cerdanya in Puigcerdà, Spain.

Rules to know

Before each stage, check the Météo-France mountain forecast (meteofrance.com, Montagne) for the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Hautes-Pyrénées, Haute-Garonne, Ariège or Pyrénées-Orientales. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August; fog is frequent in the Basque Country.

Pharmacies, cash and supplies

At night, on Sundays and on holidays a duty pharmacy (pharmacie de garde) covers each area: call 3237 or read the notice on any pharmacy door. Pharmacies are in the valley towns (Hendaye, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Arrens-Marsous, Cauterets, Luz-Saint-Sauveur, Saint-Lary, Luchon, Seix, Ax-les-Thermes, Mont-Louis, Arles-sur-Tech, Banyuls) but not in the high villages. There is no cash machine in Aulus-les-Bains, and many refuges take only cash or cheques.
