Hospital Mateu Orfila, Maó (public, 24 h emergency department)
Hospital General Mateu Orfila
- 24/7 emergency
- Stages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20
Ronda de Malbúger 1, 07703 Maó
The nearest hospital with a 24-hour emergency department for each of the 20 stages, the public 24-hour urgent-care centres, how to call for rescue on the coast path, the rules for walkers on Menorca, and pharmacies and shops near the trail.
In an emergency call 112 from any phone; it is free, works 24 hours and answers in Spanish and Catalan, with interpreters for other languages. 112 sends the SAMU 061 ambulance, the Bombers de Menorca (who carry out most rescues on the Camí de Cavalls) and the police; you can also call 061 directly for a medical emergency. Say which stage you are on, the nearest beach (cala) and the number on the nearest Camí de Cavalls marker post, what happened and how many people are hurt, and stay on the line. Mobile signal is missing in many coves: climb to higher ground or walk to the nearest road.
| Number | What it is |
|---|---|
| 112 | Single emergency number for the Balearic Islands: ambulance (SAMU 061), fire and rescue (Bombers de Menorca, who carry out most walker rescues on the trail) and police. Free from any phone, 24 hours, answered in Spanish and Catalan with interpreters for other languages. |
| 061 | SAMU 061, the Balearic health emergency service and ambulance |
| +34 971 356 251 | Consell Insular de Menorca, environment department (Camí de Cavalls): fallen signs, damage and closures, not emergencies |
Mobile signal is missing in many coves and valleys, and ambulances often cannot reach the path: rescuers may have to carry you to the nearest road. Say the number on the nearest marker post, tell someone your plan for the day, and carry enough water.
Before you go, check the notices on camidecavalls.com for closures and diversions (in late 2025 a short signed diversion was set up in Ciutadella for street works on stage 11). Resort buses and many hotels run only from spring to autumn; out of season, plan taxis between stage ends and towns.

The public urgent-care points (PAC/SUAP) at the Canal Salat health centre in Ciutadella and the Es Banyer health centre in Alaior attend urgent cases 24 hours. Other health centres and the private summer medical centres in the resorts (Arenal d'en Castell, Cala en Porter and others) keep daytime hours only and are not emergency departments. Visitors from the EU, EEA, Switzerland and the UK get public care with an EHIC or GHIC card; private clinics charge unless your insurance covers them.

At night and on Sundays a duty pharmacy (farmàcia de guàrdia) covers each area; pharmacies post it on the door. On the trail there are pharmacies in Maó, Es Castell, Ciutadella, Arenal d'en Castell, Cala en Bosc, Cala Galdana, Sant Tomàs, Son Bou, Cala en Porter and Punta Prima, and in Fornells, 2 km off stage 4; resort pharmacies may close in winter. There are none in Es Grau, at Favàritx, along the north coast from Cala Tirant to Ciutadella, or at Cala en Turqueta, so carry a first-aid and blister kit.
